Show Evening Concerts begin July 11 edar City isn't just Shakespeare in the summer, It'.; a~so music-good music. Sponsored by the SUU Special Projects Office, the fourth season of the Summer Evening Concert Series offers exceptional musicians of national and international reputation. These award-winning performers, each with an individual style of music, perform in the Randall L. Jones Performing Arts Theatre every Sunday at 7 p.m. from July 11 to August 29. All performances are free and open to the public. Camera or recording equipment is not allowed into the theatre and no one under the age of five will be admitted. For further information, call 586-7756 or 586-5483. The first performer is Native American flautist, R. Carlos Nakai. He incorporates original and personal improvisatory elements as well as authentic traditional themes within his music. His playing reflects the duality of honoring traditions and developing new musical expressions. Nakai continually seeks new avenues of expression for the music of his culture and explores theexpressive possibilities of the flute. Nakai is the world's foremost performer of the Native American flute; his performance is co-sponsored by the SUU Multicultural Center, SUU Upward Bound Program and KREC 98 FM. Saud/Live Jazz! performs July 18. Master jazz flutist Abdur-Razzaq leads his band in performing America's purest art form, live jazz. Hailed as sensational in his artistry, Abdur-Razzaq has performed and recorded with world renowned pianist Billy Taylor, Melba Moore and Gwen Guthrie. For more than a dozen years Saud has brought their unique jazz sound throughout the east.em United States. The group's unique ability to perform in different combinations of instruments allows for a diversity of repertoire and provides a flexibility that brings vitality and freshness to their spirited interpretations of traditional and contemporary works. The Vlklarbo Chamber Ensemble performs July 25. Chris Proctor is the next concert series performer, appearing in Cedar City August 1. Proctor occupies a prominent place in the contemporary guitar revolution . His exceptional compositional skills, polished technique; and willingness to explore and innovate havs propelled him to the forefront of this movement and to nationwide acclaim. The Cowdaddies will bring the classic sounds of Gene Autry, The Sons of the Pioneers and Bob Willis to Cedar City August 8. They rustle up songs of the trail drive and the call of the canyons as they celebrate the big sky and the open range . Gail Niwa, pianist, appears next on the concert lineup. She created a sensation at the 1991 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, not only winning the top prize (never before won by a woman), but also capturing two additional awardsthe Audience Prize and the Chamber Music Prize. Niwa's orchestral debut was with the Chicago Symphony at age eight. The Aldiviva Quartet, a group whose work includes an emphasis on mandolin, performs Aug. 22. From Bach to Brubeck, New Age to Country, internationally acclaimed harpist and singer Harvi Griffin is an artist of remarkable freedom and flexibility.
