Grounds Superintendent Chris Gale has been quick to start his eight-hour day in the early morning hours when snow falls. "He likes to start clearing things up as soon as the snow accumulates," said Linda Reber, plant operations office manager. "He sometimes starts as early as two in the morning; he calls the crew and gets everyone down here." Those students who walk to 8 a.m. classes on clear sidewalks should be grateful for the unseen workers who make the yellow brick road a little easier to follow. APPLY NOW FOR SCHOLARSHIPS E veryone sho uld apply for a scholarship before the Feb. 1 deadline! Applications are available in the Ad ministration Building in the Admissions Office on the first floor. The application is an easy to fill out, one-page form. The Admissions Office will send a letter by the middle or end of February notifying those students who will be awarded scholarships. Last year, '92-'93, more than 1,800 SUU students received a variety of scholarships including athletic, academic, Western Undergraduate Exchange, VA benefits, Utah Teachers, and many others. A grade point average of 3.9 qualifies students for full tuition scholarships, while a 3.7 gpa and above qualifies students for half.tuition scholarships. But, even students with Lower gpa's, said Senior Admissions Officer Marlynn Smith, should apply because their applications may qualify for certain departmental scholarships. Many departments have privately donated scholarship funds available for distribution. After reviewing a student's scholarship application, Admissions Office personnel will pass the application along to the specific department of a student's major, Smith said. Department heads then consider the applications and make final selections. Higher enrollment means stronger competition for scholarships and increased importance placed on maintaining good grades. All the more reason to apply now. The Admissions Office personnel can also direct students to additional scholarship sources offered by the community. LETTERS Keep informing about Oak Hall crisis . TO THE EDITOR: Thank you for the informative coverage of the current Oak Hall crisis. It has helped my family, who lives in Oak Hall, clear up some of the confusion concerning our educational future. Since The Thunderbird is so much more accessible than privare newspapers, I would ask you to please continue covering this story. While Mr. Church claims Cedar City has enough family housing in the private sector, many of us would welcome assistance in discovering where this alleged housing is. Besides, Oak Hall does not charge separately for utilities. A number of SUU educations has fallen into jeopardy. Even an extra $85 a month (minimum!) is a heavy blow to the college-oriented and family-oriented budget. Your service, in the form of further coverage and publication of letters-to-the,editor, would be greatly appreciated. Chris and Debbie Scott Give me a break, goddess of pronouns TO THE EDITOR: THE THUNDERBIRD about 50 families, who are all scrambling to find a new place to live (and many families must stay here in the summer.) This competition makes house.hunting an Urgent! and High-Pressure! task. Although I can only speak for myself, 1 disagree with the current, low-key response to this situation. For instance, although I may have misinterpreted their information, subsidized housing has a one to two-year waiting list. In addition, the quoted $300 price for replacement housing is misleading. While such a rare may exist, I'm certain a very few I'm so mad and distressed, that I think someone, besides me, should explode. I refuse to believe that someone in our intellectual community could be so cold, so bold, so calculating and insensitive to women everywhere, by writingin the '90's no less-an editorial in a university publication using the words HE and HIS when referring to both sexes . Excuse me while I regurgitate my oomposure.Such blatant insensitivity should never be forgiven. Murder-yes. Child al:iusc-yes. Pronoun abuse-never! I am peiaonally·so-dastresscd that I'm sure I'll never get over it The shock of exclusion just paranoided me beyond endurance. I'm not sure I can go on. Please, bear with me. Excuse me for a moment while I change to sackcloth and ashes. Please, just for me, could ~; observe a moment of silence; and bend over for the feminists' view point. Thank you. I feel so much pronoun for 100 per cent of your audience- yes, male and female, and those others. And don't let po mpous, non· intellectual sow-wash persuade you or indoctrinate you otherwise. It's probably a Communist thing, or a United Nations one-world.order thing. Remember, you are intellectuals too-you think don' t you? We don't have to swallow everything shoved at us at this university or any other. And remember, if you want to make the correct decision, agree with me. My personal pronoun i.s a she.
