October Releases: Basic Instinct Batman Returns Beauty and the Beast opportunity in Psi Chi BY HEATHER GREEN Thunderbird Scaff WrileT Psi C hi, the National Honor Society for Psychology, has been on campus since last year, and this year the group is beginning fall quarter with the smallest membership it has had since it became available to SUU students. The National Honor Society was founded on a national levd in 1929 to encourage psychology students to maintain excellence in all fidds, as well as to advance the science of psychology. Psi C hi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is an associate of the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society. Psi Chi's SUU chapter is operated by Mark Winter, assistant professor of behavioral and social science, and by President Kim Grynic.k, Vice President JaNoy Neild, Treasurer Laura Hollinger and Secretary Angie Edwards. Each chapter of Psi Chi shares two main goals. The first of these is to provide academic recognition to its members; the second is to promote and further the accomplishments of members by offering an atmosphere compatible to creative development The honor society on campus meets on a weekly basis. Each year, the members attend a regional, professional conference that the students present papers at. In addition to these weekly and annual meetings, SUU Psi Chi sponsors a guest speaker on a quarterly basis. These lectures are open to declared psychology majors and minors. Grynick, the current president of Psi Chi, is also coordinating a community service project with Cedar High School that will provide peer advising and guidance to the students. Studen ts interested in joining Psi Chi must meet the qualifications. A completion of 12 credit hours of psychology, or nine hours and registra.tion of three credit hours of psychology are required. The members of Psi Chi must be declared majors or minors of psychology, and must be in the upper 35 percent of their class in general scholarship. Besides these requirements, students must demonstrate superior scholarship in psychology. "Psi Chi is a springboard for professional growth. Opportunities are made available to the members for promoting their research, receiving national and international recognition, meeting and interaction with leaders in their fidd, and meeting Psi C hi members of other chapters who also will be future leaders," according to a pamphlet written about Psi Chi.
