Tu Summerbird • June 22, 1992 • Page 7 SUU evening concerts display great variety The third annual SUU Summer Evening Concert Series lineup will offer musical entertainment ranging from bluegrass to classical guitar. Sponsored by the SUU Special Projects Office, the concert series enhances Cedar City's summer festival season by offering performances each Sunday evening in July and August that feature artists with national and international reputations. Performances begin at 7 p.m., and all concerts in the series are open to the public and free, except the Utah Symphony performance. The Utah Symphony opens the season June 28 with its annual concert in the Centrum at 7 p.m. Kory Katseanes directs the concert made possible by donations from Obert C. and Grace Tanner. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students and are available at the Centrum Box Office. Mark Deaton follows with a tenor performance in Thorley Recital Hall July 5. A graduate of SUU who starred in theatre productions such as The Wi..: and Carmen, Deaton has become a worldwide performer and recently completed a tour of Europe with the Opera Company of Vienna. Todd Woodbury and Tully Cathey present a classical guitar duo July 12 in the Randall L Jones Theatre. Bagpipes are featured July 19, with a performance by the Utah Pipe Band in the Adams Memorial Theatre. The concert will be held in conjunction with the Highland Heritage Festival. The July 26 concert is presented by the Drink.all-Baker Duo. since 1986, pianist Dian Baker and violoncellist Roger Drinkall have toured extensively throughout the United States, the Far East, Central and South America and the Middle East. The concert, in Thorley Recital Hall, is funded in part through the Utah Arts Council and Utah Performing Arts Tour. International folk dance and music will be presented by the Zivio Ethnic Arts Ensemble Aug. 2, in the Randall L Jones Theatre. "Zivio,'' which means "hurrah" in Serbo-Croatian, is a JS-member group that includes dancers, singers and musicians. The performance is funded in part by the Utah Arts Council and Utah Performing Arts Tour. Pianist Pierce Kagari Emata will focus on the works of Ludwig van Beethoven Aug. 9, in Thorley Recital Hall 1n addition to a piano performance, Emata's presentation, "Concerts and Conversation;' will also address the life of the famed composer, including his losing battle with deafness. The percussion artistry of the Brough/Wolf Duo will be presented Aug. 16, in the Randall L Jones Theatre. Ron Brough is professor of percussion at Brigham Young University and Doug Wolf is a professor of percussion at the University of Utah. Masters of the vibraphone, marimba, xylophone and steel drum, they will perform a selection of classical, jazz and new age music. Traditional and contemporary country music is featured Aug. 23, with a concert by Laurie Lewis and Grant Street in the Randall L Jones Theatre. The four-member acoustic group will play bluegrass, old-time country duets, swing torch songs and contemporary folk ballads. The final concert of the summer series will be presented by the Dutton Family, a Utah group that also features acoustic bluegrass and country music. However, the Dutton Family also performs classical music as part of their repertoire, a unique blend of styles.
