The Merchant of Venice is a story of love, intrigue, disguise, and humor on one hand and a story of racism, hate, greed and cruelty on the other. The story is set in the busy commercial city of Venice where Antonio, a wealthy, a merchant who, having lavishly aided his friend Bassanio's courtship of Antonio's daughter Portia, finds himseJf in debt of Shylock the usurer, who is a member of a proud and mistreated race and who wants his "pound of flesh!' Shylock is not inclined to be merciful, even after Portia's immortal "quality of mercy" speech. The Merry Willes of Windsor gives audiences Sir John Falstaff, the loveable rogue from the Henry IV plays. as a lover-and seeking to share his "irresistible" charms with two honest housewives. In this comedy, the only one Shakespeare wrote with a middledass setting, the corpulent old renegade sets about to translate the ladies "from honesty into English:' and the fun begins. Amused and annoyed, the merry wives decide to teach him a !es.son; and soiled laundry, trysts, and Sweet Anne Page with her three suitors all get mixed up in the proceedings.
