Iron County's rapid job growth easily eclipsed the Salt Lake/Ogden metro area (2.2 percent), the Provo/ Orem area (2.5 percent), Cache County (5.8 percent) and Washington County (4.3 percent). Only Summit county, home of Park City, was higher at 12.3 percent Fueling the county's economic growth has been substantial enrollment increases at SUU, which has posted a 20.4 percent increase in students over the past two years. With student housing nearing capacity in Cedar City, construction of additional apartments has escalated dramatically with 112 new apartment units currently under construction, compared to but four for the same time period last year. The new units are expected to be ready for occupancy in time for the university's fall opening. Despite the area's job increase, SUU officials cite a need for additional jobs that could be held by students attending SUU. "We have a significant portion of our university population who require job opportunities both during the summer months and during the regular school year:' said Mark Barton, assistant vice president for student services. Barton pointed out SW is a residential university with upwards of 80 percent of its students having moved to Cedar City to obtain their college education "The added burden of room and board costs, in addition to tuition and fees. makes it imperative for many of the students to seek supplemental incomC:' Barton said. Encouraged by the recent announcement that Anderson Hickey Company, a major new business which will manufacture metal office furniture, will locate· in Cedar City and will presumably be hiring some university students, SW officials emphasized there will be a need for even more jobs and indicated they were actively pursuing firms who can employ part-time workers in the hopes they might relocate in Cedar City. ·, PUm.JSHIO,otHI\.T DRa{iON'S l{eep Comics % Games % Arcade Now open 24 hours a day for Utah Shakespearean Festival 491 South Main #13 • 586-2136 CEDAR CITY ST.
