"We did wonderful," said Suzanne Larson, debate coach. The competition incorporated both debate and individual events. Erin Waldman placed first in prose, second in POI, Kim Lewis got a fifth place in impromptu and Sandy Shiner placed third in impromptu. Amy Anderson and Earl Bandy debated together to earn fifth place nationally. " Anytime we get a national ranking, we don't complain," said Larson . She added that two other debate teams qualified for the competition in the amount of wins they had, but they didn' t have enough points. A pair of SUU freshmen, debating together as a team for the first time ever, earned a fifth place finish in the recent Junior Division Debate Nationals held in Fairfax, Va. Bandy placed fifth last week in the junior nationals when he debated with Jarom Fawsom. " They debated the best junior teams from across the nation," said Larson. Several three-credit classes will · be offered spring quarter at S UU and Dixie College as part of the SUU/USU cooperative master's degree program in teacher education. The program is specially tailored to meet the needs of inservice teachers. The majority of classwork required for the master's degree can be completed at SUU during the summer, with other classes taught during the year. Three classes are being offered in St. George, all of them to be taught at Dixie College in the Liberal Arts Center, Room 204. The classes are SP ED 204, SP ED 533, SEC ED 656 and EDUC 750. EUSEC ED 615, SEC ED 624 and ED 710, to be taught at SUU, meet in Old Main 205. Registration is the first class period. For further information, contact James Miller at 586-7800. Evening classes available Southern Utah 's DCE provides wide variety of offerings Spring quarter evening school classes offered through SUU's Division of Continuing Education arc an effective cure for "couch potato syndrome." From yoga to graduate teacher education, the spring evening school catalog contains a selection of approximately 80 classes for people of virtually all ages and interests. Copies of the free catalog are available at the Division of Continuing Education Office in the Administration Building, Room 304. They can also be obtained at the Admission Office in the Adminstration Building and at the SUU Bookstore in the Student Center. The catalog also contains information on tuition and fees for evening school classes, as well as registration instruction. The building will hold classes winJer quarter. Old science center 'unfit' According to Al Tait, College of Science d ean, SU's new science center is set for completion at the end of October. The Life Science Center, which docs not meet fire codes, will undergo renovation to meet fire and earthquake codes and upgrade in order to be fit to hold classes in. Tait said, "It is probably a little incorrect to have classes in the building right now. However, the building docs have the required exits. " He added that were no fire codes when the building was constructed. "I don't know if I'd say it 's dangerous," he said. H e pointed out that the old science building, which will be used for general classes and offices, does not need to be torn down but just renovated , which will begin when the new science center is fmished. At that time the home economics department will move to the North Wing until upgrading is completed and they can move back to the South Wing.
