Rights are being lost KNOWLEDGE: I'm a senior finally and now know I know nothing, and what I think I know is suspect. I wish I were a freshman again. I knew so much I could boggle my own mind-and often did. •' Mediocre men often have the most acquired knowledge.'' (Herodotus-484-432 B.C .) " It is good to know. It is better to do. Doing brings wisdom ." . (Edward Barnsfunkle-1992) WHAT ROAD WILL YOU TRAVEL? So, when you leave school, what are you going to do, get a job? Work for the other guy? Start a business? Marry rich? Or just take it with you, like a shopper filling his grocery cart? Or clone yourself like some have done and teach . CLONES: Cloning is endless. You go to grade school, middle school, high school, college. Then you go back to grade school or middle school or high school and teach. And you teach others and they teach others-it' s the endless cloning of the learned. Hopefully you' ll be wise and get some experience in your field, then come back and teach. But please, for the sake of students yet unborn, learn to teach . " Nothing in education is so astonishing as the amount of ignorance it accumulates in the form of inert facts. " (Henry Adams) " The average Ph.D . thesis is nothing but a transferen ce of bones from one graveyard to another. " O. Frank Dobie) POLITICS: Go ing to vote? Too busy? Don' t care? W on 't make no difference? Yes? No? Campus election coming up. "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his friends for his political life. " Oeremy Thorpe) " Applause, mingled with boos and hisses, is about all that the average voter is able or willing to contribute to public life." (Elmer Davis) The following quote may not be true in all cases, but in America 's case it is absolutely right on target: " Every nation has the government that it deserves. " Qoseph Marie de Maistre) And what do we have today that we so rightly deserve? When was the last time you or your parents or anyone you personally know been to a political meeting? Me either. Dam . Repent. Wake up and smell the prison. Our rights aren't slipping away; they're being gutted , like a lamb lured to the slaughter, ripped open, gutted and dissected until there's nothing left. (But hey, I gotta watch the tube; see the b abe; hug the hunk. Bug-off man, I'm busy.) Get unbusy, get involved . Vote on campus. Vote in the community, state, nation. Know the issues. Know the laws before the legislature ; find a cause; write letters; run for office ; get off your butt. If you don 't , may your nose hairs reach out and touch someone. R epent. RELIGION: How come the only place we hear about God anymore is in church? Are we a godless n ation ? Separa tion of church and state never meant eliminating God from government. It meant not pro motin g any specific religion as a national, government-sanctioned religion. Gee, with all the noise against religion , do you think we could still believe in a Supreme Being and not be stoned for mentioning it? Do you think He's still up there? If He is, do you think He's mad yet? " For several years more I maintained public relations with the Almighty. But privately, I ceased to associate with him ." Qean Paul Sartre) " I could not say I believe . I know! I have had the experience of being gripped by something that is stronger than myself, something that people call God." (Carl Jung) ABORTION: A woman's body is h er own. She should have the choice to do with it as she pleases. A woman has the right to choose to have sex or no t. If she chooses sex. and conceives, (though perhaps unwanted) , the life inside should then be protected by law, as our lives are. No more choices. POTENTIAL: " Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them to become what they are capable of being." Qohann W . von Goethe) BUSY B.
