One of these is the National Junior Division Debate Tournament at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan. Forensics students will also compete in the Novice National Individual Event and Parliamentary Debate Tournament at Longyiew Community College in Kansas City, Mo. West said SUU forensics students discuss a variety of issues at these tournaments. In the junior debate several students have qualified to compete at a national level. Kara Dillard, a senior communication major from St. George, and Wade Tutley, a junior English major from Taylorsville, Utah, will compete in the Cross Examination Debate Association national championship at Cal State-Fullerton in April. Dillard and Tutley are All-American Debater candidates this year. Britany Smith, a junior education major from Vernal, Utah, qualified for nationals by placing third in persuasive speaking at the Santa Fe tournament. Rae Tilley, a senior communication major from St. George, placed second in persuasive speaking and third in program oral interpretation, and is also an alternate in impromptu speaking. “We had a lot of success [at the tournament],” West said. AFA-NIET takes place in April, but SUU tournament, students will debate the federal government’s policies about Native American land. At the AFANIET, Smith will speak on the “dangers of prescription drug ‘direct to the consumer’ advertising,” West said. “Our students do all interpretational literature... prose, poetry, drama and a variety of [other] selections,” West said. The team’s goal is to succeed at all types of or to at competitions, whether they are regional national events. West said he would like see students advance to the final round the novice tournament in Kansas City. Competition is what motivates students to achieve their educational goals, he said, because it helps them learn to make plans that will help them accomplish those goals. “We hope to gain a good cooperative educational result [through these tournaments],” West said. Scholarship deadline nearing Apply for a Summer Tutor Supervisor position with Upward Bound Visit the Upward Bound Office Sharwan Smith Center Suite 205 Applications due Monday, March 25, 2002 BY RENEE BALLENGER UNIVERSITY NEWS SERVICES Full-time students interested in a halftuition scholarship for next year are invited to apply for the Staff Association Scholatship, available to those who meet the following criteria: M Maintain at least 12 credits per semester M Have a minimum 3.0 GPA M Have sophomore, junior or senior standing Students who obtain letter(s) of recommendation from members of the Staff Association are given additional consideration, although this is not a requirement. Two scholarships will be awarded to a female and male student. The Association will award an endowed scholarship to each recipient in the amount equivalent to half a year’s in-state tuition. “This scholarship speaks well for the staff,” Dale Orton, director of admissions, said. “They are committed to students.” Applications are available in the Admissions Office in the Sharwan Smith Center.
