His upper-division sociology classes are busily creating a survey that will accurately "measure campus attitudes about movies," he said. · Laundra said this project will be the first· to survey a "large, random sample of all students at all levels." He emphasized the difference between "conservative freshman· views and the more liberal views of upper-classmen. Because the majority of students who attend Welcome Week activities are typically freshmen, Laundra is worried that the survey results did not accurately portray the views of all SUU students. Benson said the survey was d istributed specifically during Welcome Week for several reasons. Benson said the activities held during Welcome Week have the highest percentage of attendance, exposing the survey to the greatest number of students that attend school activities. Secondly, Benson said the survey results were needed in order to determine the playlist of movies for fall semester. ·we wanted to get the movie program up and · · running,· she said. Lastly, the students attending Welcome Week activities were presumed to be the students who would attend other school· activities, including the movies shown on campus. . The movie program was designed for the enjoyment of students, so Benson and Stowell wanted the input of the students who would be coming to the films. "We are not limiting choices or taking rights away by showing edited films,· Benson said. "We are spending fees in a way pleasing to students. We're providing the students w ith a service they cannot get themselves.· Jeffs and Kukic have some different ideas concerning the use of the theatre. They suggest that Stowell plan theme nights, like Star Wa,s or '80s moviessomething that need not-be edited. Stowell said the cost to show a series like Star Wa,s would exceed the program's budget, but a theme night is something she's looking into. Kukic said one concern of her's involves educational or factual movies, like Braveheart, Schindlers Ust, and JFK. Kukic is •worried they won't have the same effect edited as they do unedited." A concern of Stowell's is discrimination against students who want edited movies. "SUUSA is here to represent the students," she said. From a business perspective, "it makes sense to sell what sells. If students want to watch edited movies, that's what they'll get," Stowell said. Benson is happy to see students getting involved, but said they need to make sure they have all of the correct information before taking action. "Don't get involved embtionally," she said. Kukic said that she and Jeffs don't want to be argumentative, b1,.1t cooperative. They said by showing fi lms that don't need to be edited, we can "kill two birds with one stone." ..____·4, STBAK HOUSE <ft Steaks 46 ~Seafood 5i.Nfl'~ Utah Liquor Outlet. ~ Italian Cuisine Appetizers: Homemade Desserts: • Sulli~ Famous Potato Skins • Jumbo Onion ~ings • Hot Walnu.t Brownie • Coconut or Chocolate Cream Pie And many more...
