Show !MONDAY, JUNE 5, 1000 PAGE3 UNIVERSITY JOURNAL CAMPUS NEWS Utah Girls Staters hit campus today Girls from every region of the state will gather at Southern Utah University June 5-12 for Utah Girls State which offers training in political procedures and local and state government operations.. Over 350 girls who will start their senior year in high school this fall will participate in the week of Girls State activities. SUU has hosted the event for the sponsoring Utah American Legion Auxiliary for nearly 30 years. Participants have applied and been selected competitively from their area high schools and communities by local Auxiliary units. The girls will be divided into mythical political parties. counties, and cities where they will create the government structure and citizenry of a state which includes three counties and 12 cities. During the week, actual elected and appointed city, county, and state officials will speak to the Girls State citizens. Question and answer sessions following the addresses will allow participants to make currently serving government officials aware of their individual concerns and viewpoints regarding actual issues and circumstances. "The girls receive a wonderful understanding of the processes of government and politics through·the experiences of organizing party conventions, enacting legislation, and carrying out judicial functions,· Jane Comp, assistant director of conference services at SUU , said. "The training is directed and supervised by a staff of adu!t leaders from the Auxiliary." Four girls, who were elected to statewide office at the 1999 Girls State, will conduct most of the sessions and activities. Members of American Legion Auxiliary units from throughout the state will assist" in various capacities. "Patriotic, social, and entertainment activities are scheduled throughout the week,· Comp said. "Some of the traditional highlights of Girls State include talent programs produced by the girls, general elections for Girls State and Girls Nation officers who will return next year to preside of the week's activities, and a mock trial." The Auxiliary··s director for the 2000 Utah Girls State is Judy Daybell, Sandy. Valerie Hopper, Elsinore, and Lisa Kolstad, Salt Lake City, will be assistant directors. Tara Croshaw, Mapleton (Springville HS), who was elected last year, will serve as the 2000 governor. She will be assisted by Anna Siebach, Orem (Orem HS), attorney general; and Angela Nielsen, Springville (Springville HS), and Amy Wu, Sandy (Jordan HS), Girls Nation Senators. Hoops time Masanobu Yamoda, a junior communication major from Tokyo, Japan (right), and Yasunobu Masuda, a senior chemistry major, also from Tokyo, enjoy some friendly competition in the P.E. gym.
