"There's a constant turnover in faculty and staff; so as of right now, we know that we will have at least 73 people starting their first academic year at the university," said David McGuire, director of human resources. More than half of the new employees are staff members and 23 will be members of the teaching faculty. Not all of those starting this year will be brand new. Some began their employment at SUU after the start of the last academic year and have already spent time in their positions. "The new people, especially faculty members, fit into a variety of categories," McGuire said. ·some are employed in a relatively permanent 'tenure track' category; others are in temporary replacement positions for a short period of time; and there are other categories in between.· ' Although most of the new employees are filling vacancies rather than being hired to newly created positions, recent university growth has necessitated a larger faculty and staff, according to, McGuire. Many of the vacancies that are being filled were created by people retiring or leaving the university for a variety of other reasons. The College of Performing and Visual Arts will have one new faculty employee starting this year. The College of Business, Technology, and Communication will have the most, seven, new faculty members. Both the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Science will Have six new faculty employees, and the College of Education will h.ave three new faculty members. Michael Jordan. assistant professor of chemistry, came to SUU from the University of North Carolina. Chapel Hill. ·1 was looking for a moderately sized teaching position opposed to research. SUU looked good for what I wanted,· Jordan said. Brent Felix, media technician in the Instructional Media Center, located in the Electronic Leaming Center ELC. is an SUU alumnus of 22 years and obtained his degree in communication. He has also been a jeweler for the last 20 years. ·1 justlhope to be able to keep the university up and running1audio-visual-wise," said Felix, "I think a lot of SUU and I've looked forward to coming to this campus.· . Jared.Wilcken, assistant director of school relations, is an sutj graduate with a degree in communication. · 1 love SUU. Now I have the best job in the world: going around and telling people about this school that I adore." Wilcken's duties include helping students make smooth transitions from high school to college and assistiri_g them in finding everything they need. Wilcken said he9Yas a transfer student so he particularly focuses on students transferring from junior college to SUU. Helen Chuang is a new assistant professor of biology. She has recently graduated with a Ph.D. from the State University of New York and was also employed there. She said she chose SUU because she wanted to give something on an individual basis and SUU was a good place to do so. "There is lots of potential for studying ecology at a small, undergraduate university,· Chuang ~~ - .
