Alexander, Cox takes on Convo ·duties · BY LISA NIELSEN JOURNAL STAFF VVRITER Convocations provide SUU studentswith a "window to the world,· said Neal Cox, director of public relations and assistant to the president at SUU. Convocations is an awardwinning lecture series, held every Thursday at 11 :30 a.m. in the Auditorium and are are open to the public. The Convocations series has won national recognition in the form of the Lecture Program Award of the National Association of Campus Activities. Cox said exciting speakers are planned for fall semester including: KSL reporter Doug Miller, actor Derrick Ashong, writer Jean Kilbourne and suu communication !Vea; department Cox Associate Professor Jon Smith. "Convocations are a weekly opportunity for students to look beyond SUU and experience the world in which we live," according to a pamphlet on the convocations. Students can also get credit by attending convocations. By enrolling in UNIV 2010, stude_n ts will receive one credit by attending every convocation. Other requirements for the course credit are attendance at music and dance performances as well as trips to the Braithwaite Arts Gallery and other art exhibits on campus. Speakers are carefully selected by a committee composed of students and faculty. They are selected on the basis of the subject they present. Lana Johnson began Convocations about 15 years ago, under the direction of President Gerald R. Sheratt. Johnson will retire at the end of the school year and Cox has already assumed her duties. She, along with assistant director Marla Bingham, has been the backbone of Convocations. Bingham's duties include approaching individual speakers and inviting them to come to SUU. Attendance at Convocations has fallen in recent years. Encouraging freshmen to enroll when they attend university orientation has helped the numbers attel}ding Convocations considerably.
