This year, however, the IRS ha granted relief to college student taxpayers hy offering two different higher education credits. Eric D. Tait, an SUU senior accountant listed the two credits that allow taxpayers a reduction of their final tax hill : the Hope Scholarship Credi t and the Lifetime Leaming Credit. While similar in nature, lie said, they each have different rules that apply to them . The Hope Scholarship Credit allow for an annual deduction of up to $1 ,500 per tudcnt. But, Tait notes, the credit only applies to the first two years of a student', education , meaning on ly freshmen and sophomores can qualify. n,e studem must also have hecn enrolled at lc.Lst half-time in a degree , ecking program . Any amount paid from Jan . I , 1998 through Dec. 31 , 1998 arc cligihlc for the credit. The Lifetime I.earning Credit allows an annual limit of up to 1,000 per family. A student may take the credit regardless of whether he or she is an undcrgrJduate or graduate: , hut this yc~tr the credit on ly applies to schooling expenses amassed hctwcen· July 1, 1998 and Dec. 31 , 1998. Tait ·aid that for the 1999 tax ea on , the Lifetime Leaming Credit will run rhe entire year . Both credics have income limics of $40,000 to $50,000 for inglc taxpaye r , and $80,000 to $100,000 for joint returns. Tait said that the income limit would primarily apply to tudents whose parents claim them as dependents. The credits are not refundahle , he said, meaning that they only reduce a tudent's tax liahility. Tait said that UU mailed ahout 9,800 of the IRS Form I 098-T (Tuition Payments Statement), which included infonnation ahout the amount of tuition paid hy the tudent. He added that tudcnts who collected Pell grants, tuition waiver , and scholar hips ahove the amount of tuition and fees arc not eligihlc. The forms arc used in conjunction with the tax form 1040 or it derivative to detcnnine the amount of credit to appl)' to the student' taxes . Some exception · apply to the credits, though .
