Open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., the Expo is being held to help Utahns become better prepared to understand and use Internet technology and applications. The event is free to the public and is being sponsored by radio stations KSSD and KSUB, Iron County, SmartUTAH, and SUU. There will be more than 40 exhibitors from different sectors of business in attendance demonstrating their services and products. "The Internet provides us, as a smaller community, to be more in touch with larger communities and it is really increasing our speed of business," said Brent Drew, director of economic development for Cedar City and Iron County. The expo, said Drew, has been held already in the Uintah Basin and in St. George to bring an awareness to the smaller, more re mote communities of • the s tate. Sponsored by Smart UTAH, a not-for-profit organization that Gov. Leavitt cstabliscd to promote the information age throughout the state, the event is intended ro make people in the community aware of the possibil ities t here arc on -line. "Just in the last few years, we have seen a dramatic increase in Cedar City's economy, just from the incorporation of the Internet," said D rew. He said that one important aspect that Iron County and Cedar City are planning to do is utilize the Internet to become more in tauch with the community. "Now, the minutes from the city council meetings are available with the click of the mouse, posted for everyone to see and know what is going on. ln the future, we plan to have city maps available for development and real estate purposes, as well as a place where potential builders can obtain their building permits, water hook ups, and the rest of the necessary steps right on the Internet." Another aspect to the Internet and Technology Expo will be the seminars scheduled throughout the day. The topics of the six seminars will be: How Do I Turn This Thing On?; Internet for Families; Internet Marketing; Data, Voice and Video Collide on the Ne twork; Network Computing Technology; and Buying a Com pute r. All students are e ncouraged to a ttend, as well as me mbers of t he com mu n ity. Prizes such as a color laser printer, a 20" color monitor, and gift cernficates have been donated by the exhibitors for a drawing co be held at 6:30 p.m. "We hope to reach our to as many people as possible, so they can see first hand what technology has to offer," said Dre w.
