By JAMIE COX The cost of living in southwestern Ut.ab is rising slightly, according to information collected during January by Alan Hamlin, SUU professor of business, for an American Chamber of Commerce report. "The data for the first quarter indicate there is some upward pressure on local prices," Hamlin said. "Overall, prices rose very modestly at 0.06 percent during the quarter in St. George, and 1.9 percen t in Cedar Ci ty. Most of this increase comes in housing and health care costs in St. G eorge and in housing and miscellaneous it ems in Cedar City ." Hamlin's quart erly s tudy is jointly fun ded by Intermountain Health Care, Western Electrochem ical Company, St. George, and Cedar City. Local results are then included in t he Cost of Living Index, publish ed by the American Chamber of Commerce Researcher's Association (A CCRA). That publication allows local costs to be compared with prices in · other citi es around the nation. T he most recently published information, for the third quarter of 1997, shows a composite cost of living index for St. George of 101.4 percent, down slightly from the previous quarter's I 01.6 percent. An index of 100 percent represents the national average cost. Cedar City bad a 93.9 percent, compared to 92..8 three months earlier.
