Each m ay be taken without the student being on campus." A preparatory pre-algebra class, Mathematics 099, and a seri es of courses developed especia lly for in-service teachers arc among the traditionall y more popular independent study c lasses offered by the division. Other courses at SUU, in addition to t hose offered through the division of continuing education, arc allowed through i_ndependent study. Departmental approval and arrangement arc required fo r these c lasses, but the distance learning office will assist interested students interface with appropriate departmental personnel. Graduate level classes currentl.y being offered under the SUU independent study program include Creative C lassroom Games for Fun and Lesson Reviews (Education 545), Interactive Classroom Bulletin Boards (Education 550), Journal Writing for Educators (Education 554), Creative C lassroom Games -II (Education 590), European Cultural Geography fo r T eachers (Geography 545), World Geography for Teachers (Geography 590), and Management for Local Public Administrators (Political Science 592). U ndergraduate courses now available include Human Resource Management (Business Administration 324), Introduction to Composition (English I 0 11, Fundamentals of Language (English 271), Personal Finance (Finance 287), Salesmanship (Marketing 291 ), Pre-Algebra (Math 99), Intermediate Algebra (Math 101), Introduction to Music (Music 101 ), Introduction to the Public Service (Political Science 292), and Supervision in the Public Service (Political Science 492). Classes that allow up to nine months for completion and which permit students to study at their own pace and not attend class are being offered through Southe rn Utah University's Division of Continuing Education. Lumped under the general umbrella of "Independent Study," the classes are de livered to students through correspondence, over the internet, or by video/audio tape. On e course has an optional video tape clement. "For any number of reasons-distance being one of the major ones--some students out there need options besides attending classes on campus at set times in the traditional setting," John K. Hill, director of distance learning at SUU, explai ns. "Independent study is one way to allow the flexibility some of these people require. O ur goal is t o accommodate th ese potential students as much as we can ." Procedures for admission and costs vary for enrolling in different independent study courses, so Hill recommends that anyone interested in these classes contact the distance learning office at (801) 865-8085 or 8084 fo r assistance. N early all of the courses are on -going and allow registration at any time during the year. Most allow up to nine m onths for completion . Students who need to comply .with a timetable and have their credit earned and recorded no later than the end of the fall 1997 quarter must have their registration completed and their fees paid not later than Oct. 6. "Expansion of Services in Public Accounting" will be addressed by Randy Smith, a.representative of the Salt Lake City offices of the Arthur Andersen firm, in the first session of th e conference. A second guest speaker, Wayne Peay, who is working with the commi ssioner's office of the Utah System of Higher Education and with Utah State University, will explain in some detail the concept of the Western Governors University. The WGU, which will allow college degrees to be earned strictly through computer access to higher education training, is being promoted heavily by Utah Gov. Michael 0. Leavitt and Colorado Gov. Roy Romer. T hose two are co-chairing the WGU Steering Committee. Two panel discussions, each led by SUU faculty members, will address "Evaluation and Reward of Faculty" and "Computers in the C lassroom." Tim Lewis Jeff Barnes and Tim Lewis, both - - - -- - - -- associate professors of accounting, will lead the two panels. Th e conference will cost $25 which w iJI include a lunch.
