I Library renamed for retiring president By JIM ROBINSON CAMPUS EDITOR Utah Girls State attracted nearly 400 girls from across th e state to So uthern Utah University last week for training and activities related to local and state government and politics. During the week of activities sponsored by the Utah American Legion Auxiliary, the girls who are entering their senio r year of high school divi.ded into mythical political parties and formed the government structure and citizenry of a state, four counties, and 14 cities and functio n in their roles as citizens and leaders of the various entW es. Participants were selected from their high schools and communities through selection processes by local Auxiliary posts. Activities are directed by members of the American Legion Auxiliary from the various posts in the state. SUU has hosted Girls State fo r more than 20 years. "The girls gain a wonderful understanding of the workings of government, plus practical experience o rganizing party conventio ns and enacting legislation," Jane Comp, assistant director of SUU conference services, explains. '"' .., The one-year-old Southern Utah University library will be kno wn as the Gerald R. Sherratt Library after the university's president who will be retiring June 30 .. Action by SUU's board of trustees during their recent June m eeting rat ified a surprise announcement of the naming of the new $10.5 million state of the art facility. T he library was dedicated just over a year ago, but had not been formally named until the announcement earlier this month. It was at a public cerem ony naming the library's second-story, sliced cylinder reading room after Jon M. and Karen Huntsm an on June 5 that the surprise naming occurred. The Huntsmans had donated $500,000 to a permanent endowm ent fund to continuously update the facility 's educat ional resources. It was near the end of the event naming the reading room that Mr. Huntsman revealed that a condition of the donation was that the library be named after·Sherratt. The retiring president, who has served over 15 years, was unaware of the m ovement to name the building after him. Commenting on the gift to SUU's library, Huntsman noted that "Our family is very pleased to providt: this gift to the Southern Utah University Library. We join many others in expressing o ur pride in and appreciation for this outstanding university. President Gerald Sh erratt has demonstrated exemplary leadership in building the library into one of the finest in the ... education system of Utah." David J. Jordan, chair of the SUU Board of Trustees, who conduct ed the naming/ announcement meeting said "Gerald R. Sherratt tru ly is an exemplar of service and dedication. His love fo r this institution is unmatched, and hi s vision and devotion arc gifts that the people of southern U tah will long rem ember and admire." The Gerald R. Sherratt Library is a fo ur-story structu re architecturally high I i.g htc<l by a sliced cylinder which ho uses the Jo n M . and Karen Hun tsman Readin g Room. The building was a capacity of n early a quarter-million volumes, and it has s tudy stations fo r 1,200 students. State of the art electronic equipment for searching bibliogiaphic data bases and for student self check o ut are other features of the library. Ho used in the library is a special collections area -·----;;-, which ho uses the William R. Palmer Room, th e John L Seym our Room, and the Grace Tanner Room for the Study of Human Values. The ,. Mrs. Huntsman is a m ember of the state Board of .Kegents, and she was instrumental in securing the change in status. Sherratt's tenure has seen the addition of m aster's degree programs in education and accounting and the addition of several other degree opportunities. He was the prime mover in the creation of the Utah Summer Games which is now in its 12 season and is the state's largest amateur sports festival. A graduate of Cedar City High School, Sherratt earned an associate degree from SUU in 195 1. At the national conference, SUU delegates wi ll attend s tate, regional, and nationa l business meetings and student worksh ops in addition to participating in t heir competitive events.
