The second and third graders in Lois Burdett's classes in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, are learning all about Shakespeareand they are performing it. In fact, they are performing so well, they have been invited to present two special productions at this summer's Utah Shakespearean Festival. The 25 students, parent chaperones, and school officials will be making the journey to Cedar City from Ju ly 25 to 27. The students' special pedormances dates are July 25 at 10 a.m. and July 27 at 11 :30 a.m. in the Adams Shakespearean Theatre. Tickets and information can be obtained by calling 800-PLA YTIX or 801-586-7878. "I saw them perform at a Shakespeare Theatre Association of America meeting-and I was bowled over. Brill iant, absolutely brilliant," said Gary Armagnac, education director and actor at the Festival. " So , I invited them to perform for the Festival." "The students do all the research on Shakespeare then produce a play. They design the set, direct, everyth ing. It's practical application of life skills through Shakespeare." This is only the beginning of the Festival's work with children, the audience of the future. "I see th is as a beginning of a long-term commitment to elementary education for the Festival," said Armagnac. "I intend to expand this effort into an inservice program for Utah educators." Other plans for this project include inservice workshops taught by Armagnac and Burdett. Seven-year-old David Marlevitz, a student of Burdett's, summed up the feelings of everyone involved in this special project when he wrote a letter to Armangac: "May all men be delighted but only one be overjoyed with the wee ones who roared, 'Shakespeare can be Fun!' You're opening your heart to all humans, tall to small, fat to skinny. People of the world, Utah here we come! See you soon, from David ." All heavy steel and other exterior construction work has been concluded and the schedule for completion or what wlll become the Sharwan Smith Center next spring Is well ahead or earlier projections.
