Show ..-e.:say Jalllnlll • """*Y, .bit 24, 1996 • 3 Concert season begins Sunday e "chamber-style sound of a jazz rio" will be featured June 30 in the rst presentation of the seventh season of the SUU Summer Evening Concert Series. Pianist Ira Stein will be joined by saxophonist Dann Zinn and cellist Hans Christian for the 7 p.m. concert in the Randall L. Jones Theatre. Known as the Ira Stein Group, the trio will be opening the nine-week popular summer series hosted by the lectures and special projects office. All performances during the summer are free. "Ira Stein is known as a master of intimate melodies and inventive improvisations," Marla Bingham, manager of the concert series, explains. "Zinn brings blues and jazz experience to the group, and Christian has a strong classical background. They feed off each other when they perform, improvising often." Stein has recorded five albums so far in his career. The first three were with oboist Russel Walder, starting when Stein was only 19 years old. He also recorded a solo album and an album titled "Spur of the Moment'' with the current group. Music of the group is categorized as new age by many, but Stein prefers to refer to it as chamber jazz. According to Stein, chamber jazz has the intimacy of a chamber group and the spontaneity of jazz. It was after his parents bought a piano when Stein was 10 years old that his musical interest blossomed. At age 18 Stein attended a workshop with Oregon's Ralph Towner, and there he met oboist Walder. The two recorded four of Stein's compositions as potential performance pieces. The recording was discovered by William Ackerman who signed the duo to a contract with the Windham Hill label.
