Show THE UNlVERSlTY JOURNAL• SOUTIDRN trrAH v:NIVBRSITY • MONDAY, JULY 10, 1995 Shakespeare Theatre School begins for youth next week Program teaches youngsters to better enjoy the vast Bard's world Have you seen an old man and a unicorn walking down the street, or a Phoenix dying in a burst of flames in the Arabian desert? Do you know what Queen Elizabeth is " really" like? Have you enjoyed the Greenshow and want to learn more? Do you like to sing, dance, act and create plays? Maybe you just want to get out of the house this tu11mer? That is what 35 childr n age 8-14, and 14 artists want to do. So they joined the Shakespeare Thea tr ch ol for Youth, July 17-21, at outhem Utah University. Laurie Perry, director, has worked with the University of Utah Theatre School since 1986 and would like to start the same tradition in Cedar City under the shadow of the Utah Shakespearean Festival. "I want to teach children in a fun way, she said, "and expand the Theatre School idea into a total art experience with Shakespeare. I want to involve young people with mentor artists in a team effort to create and perform in a professional way." Students will participate each sixhour day in puppetry with Sandra Stigllnski; medieval art such as swords, ma k and tapestries with Debbie Drake and Cindy Bettridge; simplified 11 opera numbers about Virotti's unicorn with Adrianne Tawa and Jennifer Tanner; creative drama with Perry, Nathan Shumate, Chris Anderson and Stiglinski; and, finally, archery with Chad Harwood and Heather Herron. Small groups with individual directors will also create scenes from Shakespeare to be perfom1ed, along with musical theatre numbers, in the Thorley Recital Hall, Friday, July 21, for family members. Archery skills will be hown in a contest for the Water Festival Friday afternoon. 11The Water Festival came from an old wood cut showing an outdoor entertainment for Queen Elizabeth in 1591. We are creating some waterworks, an archery contest and puppet shows for the Queen. The event will start with a procession of tapestries leading Queen Elizabeth, Katie Wood, in full costume, to her canopy throne. We hope to have a good tin1e," said Perry. If you didn't know about the Theatre School. it's not too late. Call 865-1830 for information. Creative drama classes can also be taken this coming year through SUU's Division of Continuing Education or Cedar City Recreation. The Theatre School is $52 and other classe during the year arc $25. ~outbern Wtab"'s JLargest ~election of Qtomtcs anb <!?ames 64 1/2 N.
