THAT' GREAT thanks For, I c::iT Know X'U-- EASY INGOING HOW JUST TO RUINImC SuRviVE The drama that unfolded around SUUs sociology program in the past month has been a lesson in the power of fervent student activism and administrative diplomacy. Sociology majors and other concerned students have protested the possible shortage within the History & Sociology Department. Andrew Bamford, assistant professor of sociology, is taking a position in Japan and was not going to be replaced. Nicole Lee, a senior sociology major from Big Bear, Calif., led the protest by collecting about 150 signatures as part of a petition to preserve the departments position. SUU President Michael T. Benson and SUU Provost Rodney Decker eventually conceded to preserve the position, at least temporarily, with a one-yeposition funded out of Bensons fund. discretionary We are enthused to see fellow students with such passionate concern for their education. Lee marshaled considerable courage to stand up to the administration and provides a great example for what student activism can accomplish, at least in the short-fuar n. However, that fanaticism is misplaced because, unlike Lees plea that administrators not reduce the sociology program to enrollment numbers, the correct allotment of professorial positions must be exactly that: driven by the demands of growth. Decker said 13 as many students graduated from a loss sociology last year than did five years ago that clearly indicates the precious faculty position be reallocated to one of SUUs burgeoning programs and reinstated in the future when demand returns. Benson and Deckers deal to provide for the temporary position is a deft maneuver that allows sociology to justify keeping the position but also leaves the open tenure-trac- k position to be placed elsewhere where it is more desperately needed. We have no problems with the sociology department we hope the program is able to justify the additional but we urge students to understand how position this process works university-widFor many programs it ebbs and flows, and departments make do in the lean years, like political science has for three years. Heres to healthy competition serving to maintain the quality of SUUs academic life. e. are the collective the Journal Editorial perspective of University Board. The education and athletics have been amazing, but the college experience has been lacking due to Cedar City not having enough activities available to students. Granted, there are two movie theatres, a bowling alley and restaurants, to name a few, but one main source of college students entertainment thats missing is a new shopping mall. Even though Cedar City offers a couple of shopping centers: Sports Authority, Maurices, Downeast Outfitters, etc., these shopping centers Payless Shoes, Wal-Madont fulfill the shopping needs of most students. When I look around campus, I notice that a large majority of the students are wearing name-bran- d clothing: American Eagle Outfitters, Aeropostale, Hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch, etc. Moreover, it can be concluded that there arent a lot of students that are willing to spend their money on Wal-Mabrand clothing. Students want to be able to shop for clothing without having to travel 50 miles to St. George. From my experience, it takes a quarter of a tank of gas, which is equivalent to $10, and an hour and a half just to travel to and from St. George; this is not only a waste of time, but a waste of money. For this reason. Cedar City should spend their money on getting a shopping mall offering these popular name brands. One main reason Cedar City should get a shopping center is that it would benefit the people in Cedar City. The city would be benefited by giving them somewhere to shop on a daily basis. A shopping mall gives people another activity to do on the weekends. It gives people the opportunity to spoil themselves on materialistic goods after their long workacademic week. In addition, a shopping mall provides people with a place to exercise (walking) when its too cold outside. Besides benefiting the people of Cedar City, a shopping mall could also benefit the town. As more and more people spend money, Cedar Citys economy would be increasing. Also, having a shopping mall would provide the city with more job opportunities for people, especially college students. Many college students are looking for jobs where they could pick up a couple of hours a week in order to have a little extra spending money on the weekends. By having more college students employed, there is more of a chance that more students would stay in Cedar City during the summer, thus spending more money and increasing Cedar Citys gross profit. As seen, Cedar City may offer some activities, but what would really increase their city life would be a shopping ACCESS rt, rt mall. A shopping mall would be very convenient for people because it would give them a place to buy their clothing without having to travel 50 miles to St. George, and it would benefit Cedar Citys economy because more people would be spending money. Lastly, it can be concluded that Cedar City should get a shopping mall. Melissa Johnson is a sophomore accounting major from St. Charles, III. She can be contacted at melissajohnson88gmail. com.
