SUU tuition rose $20 per quarter from last springs $338 to $358 this fall, an increase of 5.91 percent, according to Director of Admissions and Records D. Mark Barton. Although this increase is higher than students expected, said SUU Vice President for University Affairs Michael D. Richards, university officials were prepared for the tuition hike. According to Richards, tuition rose approximately 6 percent at schools. Utahs four-yecolleges and 4 percent at two-yeRichards said tuition rates at four-yeuniversities in and colleges Utah are below the national tuition average while costs at two-yecommunity colleges tire well above the national average. Going to school in Utah is a bargain compared to other states, he added. The Utah Board of Regents is devising a policy to increase tuition at four-yeinstitutions by 6 percent each year in attempt to meet the national average, said Richards. At the same time, the regents would like to slow the increasing costs of two-yeschools in order for the national average to reach comparable levels, he said. schools is to Another reason for the lesser increase at two-yeRichards enrollment these institutions. at said, I encourage believe its not the sole driving force for the smaller increase but it is a benefit. ar when you buy a salad bar meal. Currently there are about 3,620 students, 500 students more than last fall. Of those numbers, a large increase comes from the freshman class. For the first time, according to Director of Admissions and Records D. Mark Barton, it is the largest of the classes. Its 1,700 students comprise nearly half of all people registered. Of freshmen, 850 have never before been to college. Seniors rank next with approximately 800 students, then sophomores with 600. Juniors have the smallest class with 500. There are also 20 graduate students attending SUU. The recent change from a college to a university may be a major factor in the enrollment increase, said Barton. People no he said. institution, longer assume that we are a two-yeSUUs successful alumni may also be a factor. Barton said that very rarely is anyone from this institution rejected from graduate and professional programs. Record enrollment wont affect actual class size a great deal, ratio in the classroom last though, Barton said. Faculty-to-studeyear was one to 20, he said, and that number is not expected to change, due to the small size of the classrooms themselves. However, the number of times a class will be offered has been raised to help accommodate the increased number of people. in "13 fU 91 -- 92 GUARANTEED SEASON PASSES ON SALE NOW! ar Rates valid Sept. 14 Buy MOW 13-1- and 8) 6-- Save $100!
