Help is available, however, in the form of federal grants and student loans, offered through the Financial Aid Office to qualified students. Qualifying for the money, however, is only the first step. There are strings attached. After qualifying for a student loan, SU policy requires students to attend a loan counseling session. A brief video presentation is followed by a discussion of loan payment requirements as well as deferrment options for students leaving school. For student convenience, these counseling sessions are usually held several times a day during the first few weeks of each quarter. Subsequent sessions are held about twice per week. Contact the Financial Aid Office for further information. In addition to the previous counseling session requirement, a new financial aid policy has been instated this year to help curb nationwide financial aid fraud. The new policy, issued by the U.S. Department of Education, concerns recipients of federal grants or guaranteed loans. Under the new policy, those students receiving federal grants or GSLs will be required to submit a signed statement verifying class attendance before being allowed to pick up financial aid checks. According to Director of Financial Aid Rex Michie, individual institutions are allowed to select their own method of compliance with the national edict. SU has selected a policy that officials e and say requires the least inconvenience for students and faculty. A student receiving a federal grant or a guaranteed loan must now obtain a form from the Financial Aid Office and get a signature from course professors verifying that the student did, infact, attend class. Once the signature is obtained, the student exchanges the form for his grant money. The forms are submitted to the Financial Aid Office and grant checks may be picked up from the Cashiers Office or the Accounting Office. Although there has not been a problem with attendance at SU, Michie said the Department of Education has ruled that students receiving financial aid must attend classes. If class attendance is not enforced, the university may be held responsible for the repayment of advanced grants or money for housing, etc. For further information regarding new policy requirements or loan counseling sessions, contact the Financial Aid Office at red-tap- 586-773- 5. |
