The group is designed to help adult children of these families to understand the problems they are facing, which will allow them to lead more productive lives, according to Gary Dunford, director of clinical counseling. Dunford said children growing up in a dysfunctional family often become alcoholics, marry alcoholics or marry someone with a similar compulsive behavior. In addition, Dunford said these people are usually people pleasers who constantly seek approval and develop a low self esteem. This program, he said, helps students and other program participants identify emotional, mental, physical and behavorial problems. Through counseling and group therapy, students will learn to cope with their problems and lead more normal lives, said Dunford. The group meets every Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the counseling center, and will continue to meet as a source of support for all desiring this type of counseling, said Dunford. Dunford said the program was suggested by an SU student who had participated in a similar program prior to coming here. The group is funded through the Counseling Center. The meetings are open to all, however, Dunford said, to attend students must be seeking advice or help from the program.
