It has been my dream for 40 years to take an original American dance company to Russia, said AFB founder and choreographer Mann. The dream has become a reality this summer as my company is making its debut in the Oktybrsky Grand Concert Hall in Leningrad. Emma Lavrinovich, director of the Leningrad hall, came to America to search for a dance company for the White Nights Festival and chose the American Folk Ballet through reputation and recommendation. Manns company has been praised by Hollywood Variety and The Saturday Review as an exciting addition to the American dance scence. Mann says she mourns the loss of the American folk heritage and tries to preserve its pioneer beginnings through some of her performances. It was with the thought of developing a dance style unique unto America that Mann created the American Folk Ballet, using folk history for theme and style, and techniques of classical ballet for discipline. The company will perform The Prairie Years while in the Soviet Union, a number which Mann believes shows Americans as adventurous, that which is the best of us. honest, people g The events prior to the company held tour in order to help fly the company to its destination. While in Russia, the hosts will bear the costs of the Leningrad stay and also the performances in Moscow and Riga. The tour includes a number that Mann choreographed herself and features the AFB and a Russian dance troupe in a grand finale friendship number. The 1990 Summer Festival will feature a production choreographed specifically for the premiere performances in the Soviet Union.
