Show THE THUNDERBIRD I.VAI.'f V4 ft vl3 MONDAY APRIL 25, 1988 PACE 5 RACE AWAY WITH THE SAVINGS! "Vit3 Crossing the line once again This is a time of tribulation for the players and good fans of the Baltimore Orioles. The "O's" have set a major league record for most consecutive losses to begin a season, and, at last count, the hapless O's had lost their first 18 games and had sacked their manager Cal Ripken Sr. Woe to thee oh O's fans. Last week, in keeping with the trend set by the O's, the international affairs equivalent of the Baltimore Orioles, the Iranian Navy, staggered through their second unsuccessful confrontation with the United States Navy. Like patrons of the local "Lighthouse Lounge" who have had as much of the inn's ale as is good for them and stagger to the parking lot to settle some obtuse question of honor, our own US Navy engaged in a shooting war for a day last week with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The events of last week accentuated once again the dangerous position that the U.S. finds itself in the Persian Gulf, and the day of wild hostilities seems certain to be precursor of future days in which the American Navy regularly fights an undeclared shooting war with Iran. The fighting of Monday last was called by the Reagan Administration "a measured response" to the explosion of a mine, allegedly planted by Iran, that blew a hole in the USS Samuel B. Chase a wreek ago Thursday and wounded 10 sailers. The event underscored previous administration warnings of increased mining activity by Iran in the gulf. The Reagan response, Monday, saw American warships pound into rubble two Iranian oil platforms that were suspected of being used as launches for Iranian attacks against neutral shipping in the Persian Gulf. The U.S. gave advance warning to the oil platforms of the impending attack, as is now the custom of the Navy in the gulf. After the U.S. raids, the Iranians counter attacked at several points throughout the southern gulf. In the fighting that followed, the U.S. sank or disabled six Iranian ships including the Iranian Navy frigates Sabalan and Sahand. In the course of the action, an American Cobra assault helicopter was shot down, presumedly by Iranian gunfire, and its crew of two were officially declared missing Thursday. war with neighboring Iraq, Iran, already embroiled in a has targeted neutral shipping in the gulf as a means to pressure the Iraqis to capitulation through the strangulation of the Iraqi oil industry which relies upon free shipping in the gulf. In response to pleas from Arab nations in the region, the U.S. has agreed to provide naval escort to ships flying the U.S. flag in the region. At its conception, the policy sparked the ire of many congressional opponents of the Reagan Administration who claimed that introducing American forces as policemen in the region would serve only to place Americans in harms way in that troubled region. Critics claimed that the U.S. would become involved in an endless series of conflicts that would bleed American lives and resolve nothing. The outbreak of violence in the gulf Tuesday marks a continuing slow escalation of hostilities between Iran and the U.S. in the gulf since the U.S. began to escort ships through that troubled region last year. The event marks the second time an American warship was attacked in the gulf and raises the U.S. casualties in the action to over Rent a VCR and a movie for only $5.00 and get the second movie FREE! Inspite of the disturbing hostilities and the resulting costs in human terms, the U.S. is committed to a longterm policy of military committment to protect U.S. flagged ships in the region. The prospects of war with Iran appear remote so long as the Iranian army is embroiled in the war of attrition with Iraq. However, our nation must be braced for brushes with war such as occurred last week. Given the nature of Iranian policy in the region and excluding any major infusion of reason into Iranian policymaking, it would appear that hostilities in the gulf will continue. However, the gulf region represents a critical geopolitical and strategic interest of the U.S. that cannot be forsaken. The costs of a forsaken objective in the Persian Gulf would be high in terms of the international interests of the United States. Given the American debacle in Beirut and the distant memories of U.S. hostages in Iran, the U.S. can ill afford another show of indecisiveness in this critical region.
