Show THE THUNDERBIRD Office allows more student experience The reorganization of SUSC's photo services office has brought few changes to the department, but has provided more opportunities for students to gain experience and earn money, said Larry Baker, who oversees the office as campus publications director. e The position of photo services eliminated last year by SUSC as was manager part of the cutbacks due to budget cuts. Now, e instead of employing two directors, SUSC employs only one and as a result more students can be hired, Baker said. Richard Engleman, a student photographer who has been taking many of the photos for the department, was originally hired as a lab technician. "Because of his talent as a photographer, he has taken a lot of the load off me. After his graduation may have to take a full-tim- full-tim- I more active role," said Baker. Other students working in photo services are Lynn Dennett, a lab technician, and Ken Hennefer, a business student who is receiving intern hours as well as a paycheck as a clerk and bookkeeper. "The amount of supervision required depends on the quality of work from students," Baker said. Beside quarterly student I.D.'s, photo services can provide Polaroids for graduate school applications, as well as resume and passport photos and many other photography services. Students who see their photograph in college publications can order reprints from photo services, as well. Prices range from 95 cents for wallet size photos to $4.50 for a photo. The deans showed concern that, because there is no longer a requirement for departmental stamps on registration forms, students are more difficult to track by their advisers. Mark Barton, admissions and records director, suggested each major be listed on the reverse side of the registration form with a code number. Students would put the code number of their major on the front of the form. The question of academic renewal was also presented as to whether students who are returning to school after a prolonged break can strike previously poor grades. Academic renewal can remove poor grades from a student's GPA if the grades were received eight years prior to the present. However, the problem arose that graduate schools do not look favorably upon academic renewal, withdrawals and incompletes. The deans will further investigate the matter. It will move out of the Old Student Center and into a house on 200 S. across from Oak Hall, according to Lynne Finton, center director. "In the new house we will be an independent unit and have a higher visability," said Finton. The decision for the move was made by Sterling Church, vice president for student services, and discussed with Finton. "It was based on my needs, so he came to me with a few choices that had a close proximity to the campus," Finton said. The rooms in the house will give the center more space. The oftices are larger and will also be used for tutoring and meetings. There is also a room for computers.
