Show Monday April 14, 1986 Page 4 The Thunderbird y'jwi pinion -- New student center faces old problems is almost finished, or so they say. Would it be cynical to say I dont believe it! or Its about time. or even I dont care. Ill never use it; Im graduating. The Thunderbird is glad to see the Centrum finally so close to completion, but we are very disgusted that it is nearly a year overdue, and even more disgusted that nothing was done about this waste. But, the Centrum is finally done, almost. The Centrum has been riddled with problems: A slow work schedule over the summer, and soil problems in the fall. SUSCs students and administration are facing a dilemma. Should we be ecstatic that the building is done or should we wonder who will pay for this waste. Responsibility may or may not be a problem. Finding out whos responsible would be nice, but would it solve anything? It may solve the questions of Who wasted money on what? and Why a year overdue? but who would that help? We shouldn t go on a witch-hun- t now, the problems almost solved. The school should have taken action much earlier in the school year. Fall quarter came and went. The school had a grand opening celebration. The Centrums deadline was reset for early February. Winter quarter passes. SUSC had a groundbreaking for a new student center. The Centrums deadline was reset for late March, but would be ready for classes spring quarter. Spring quarter is here. No classes are being held in the Centrum. The Centrums deadline has been reset for May. Whats the real problem here? Soil cant be the only thing making the building eight months behind schedule. We can only hope that the new student center doesnt go the same way as its counterpart. However, demolition of the War Memorial Fieldhouse was supposed to have begun on April 1, a date which has already come and gone. Construction was planned to start May 1. It wont happen by then; it will probably start Sometime in June. BY REBECCA SOUTHERN The Thunderbirds opinion may sound cynical, but there is good reason to be that way. It almost seems as if student apathy has Rebecca Southern is a freshman majoring in theatre arts spread into construction workers apathy, too. and copy editor for 'The Thunderbird SUSC President Gerald R. Sherratt has time and time again been angry at the Centrums lack of progress. He has openly Cedar City, Utah is where Southern Utah State admitted that even he doesnt know when the Centrum will be College is located. Why is it that people out of Cedar finished. City have never heard of Cedar City or Southern The new student center and the Centrum are meant to Utah State College? SUSC is not known. Whenever I go down to Las eventually be joined. The Thunderbird hopes that the physical link or up to Salt Lake City I have people ask me Vegas wont become a schedule link. When they are told Cedar City some of the people say Where is that or Oh, isnt that the two-yecollege? SUSC is constantly getting mixed up with Dixie e and Snow College, College, which is a two also a two-yecollege. People do not realize that SUSC is a four year college. It would be nice to have the college that we attend be known. Some of the people that had heard of SUSC only knew it for the Shakespearean Festival. college that They dont realize that there is a four-yea- r goes along with the festival, since the festival runs during the summer when school is not in session. Public opinion polls were conducted by Dan Jones and Associates, Inc. of Salt Lake City in 1984 and 1985. These polls revealed a significant lack of knowledge of SUSC and Cedar City. In statewide interviews of 600 people in 1984, 44 percent of the people did not know that SUSC was located in Cedar City. In 1985, 44 percent indicated the same lack of knowledge. Abo in 1984, 57 percent of the poll respondents thought SUSC was a junior college or didn't know what kind of a college it was. In 1985, 60 percent of the respondents were similarly misinformed. With out SUSC, Cedar City would have troubles year-colleg- ar SUSC existing. The college is what makes Cedar City, yet no one outside of Cedar City knows of it. Cedar City and SUSC are trying to be known throughout the state, but they have not succeeded so far. A marketing campaign has been started by a coalition of area government and community groups around SUSC, which could bring an extra $40 million into the community. They call it Project Image. Hopefully something like this will make SUSC and Cedar City known. Mike Leavitt, chairman of the newly formed Cedar City-Iro- n County Economic Development Coalition, designed Project Image to enhance the image of SUSC throughout the state and region. Leavitt claims the project can yield $40 million in economic benefits for the region in the form of additional jobs and additional population. The plan to accomplish the objectives include a professional media campaign, advertising the college and the county on television, radio and billboards. The media campaign will focus on three basic and college; it is repetitive messages: SUSC is a four-yea- r y school and it is located in Cedar City. a The project is a three-yea- r plan and the overall objective is to attract a minimum inrollmcnt of 4,000 students at SUSC by the early 1990s. This increase in students would require an additional 243 faculty and staff positions and 425 additional community service and trade jobs, assuming a standard multiplier of 1.75 service jobs for every primary job. If the project works, it will help SUSC and Cedar City with economic growth. More jobs will be made for students and people that just live in Cedar City. The college and the town would definitely be known if the project works out. Hopefully, all of the questions I get, like Where is SUSC? or Isnt that a two year college? will end after this project goes into process. high-qualit- |
