Show Page 2 The Thunderbird Monday April Not all rooms are filled yet (continued from page SUNDAY Acclaimed opera singer to perform this week Renowned Utah opera singer JoAnn Ottley will perform in a lecture concert April 4 at SUSC in the Thorley Recital Hall for Convocation. Ottley, a Utah Artist of the Year, has sung in Europe, South America, Japan, and Korea. She lists her priorities as being first a wife, second a mother, then a singer, and finally a teacher. 1) Campus housing is convenient for students not only because of its proximity to the campus, but it doesnt require students to do their own cooking and a general clean up, which is very time consuming. Apart from the renovations in Manzanita, the Residence Hall Association is going to be expanded and it will initiate a recreational area in Manzanita, which may include volleyball courts, a basketball court, horseshoes and similar activities. This year, RHA added carpeting througout Juniper Hall, installed the Jacuzzi, sauna, universal gym, and exercise bike. There is still room for more equipment. Weve had some bugs with the jacuzzi but I think these have just about been ironed out to the point where it will be available for use at any time, McKibben said. air conditioning unit will An be installed this spring. The duct work is all set up and the system is similar to the heating system so all that remains is for the system to be installed. Housing is doing a little better this academic year but its yet not up to maximum capacity. There is a lot of competition off campus and there are two or possibly three apartments planned for housing. This year Girls State is scheduled a week after graduation and this will give students time to pack beforehand. 80-to- n 1, 1985 run my singing career not according to whim of money, but according to plan, she said. While these priorities have resulted in some self confrontations and decisions during the past 20 years, the singer feels that by working her plan she has been able to resolve conflicts with the greatest possible self fulfillment. I JoAnn Ottley, a opera singer and teacher, will sing and well-know- n address students Thursday. Ottley was raised in Salt Lake City, the daughter of a typical western family. She was a very gifted piano student at a very young age, who played for all the choruses in her junior and senior high schools, as well as for church meetings. She attended the University of Utah and Brigham Young University where she met her husband, Jerold, who is the director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. She deferred her career until I had mine well launched, her husband said. But all the while she was winning contests and singing prominently wherever we went. In 1968 the couple spent a year in Germany studying music. They said that this was a pivotal point in their lives. They chose to return to Utah where they felt they would be happiest. Ottleys highly acclaimed voice with its high range, and her capability to master difficult scores quickly have added to her solid musicianship and technical facility. This has resulted in a string of tempting professional opportunities. New officers study constitutional revisions by Ralph Schriock A committee of current and former ASSUSC officials is considering several revisions for the student constitution, including moving elections to the end of spring quarter. The committee, made up of members appointed by Academic Vice President Mike Mauger, is also looking at the addition of an attorney general to the Executive Council. Any revisions proposed by the committee would have to be approved MONDAY TUESDAY by the ASSUSC senate and then voted on by the student body. ASSUSC Chief Justice John Rex said the committee is hoping to prepare any revisions for a student vote May 15. We dont want to be an elitist group and make these changes ourselves, Rex said, noting that the committee meetings, Thursdays at 5 p.m., are open to all students. Rex said the committee considered changing the election dates to make student government run in conjunction with the academic year, with new WEDNESDAY THURSDAY . officers taking over in the fall, not at the beginning of spring quarter. Wed be starting a new academic year with, a new administration, he said, adding, As it is, the only opportunity a new administration has to do planning or workshops is during spring break, and thats not enough time. The committee may create the post of attorney general to take over soVe of the duties now held by the academic (continued on page 8) FRIDAY SATURDAY |
