Thunderbird gymnasts, under the direction of Coach Kathryn Berg, competed in their annual intrasquad meet and already Berg is impressed. thought for this point in time we did extremely well, Berg said after the meet. The gymnastic squad combined for a team score of 149.25. According to Berg the score is better than last years intrasquad meet, a good indication that the season may be bright for the SUSC athletes. 1 Sophomore Terri Sodja presented balanced routines that earned her first place honors for the meet. Sodja, from West Jordan, averaged 8.0 on' dll .of thh events for the first place finish. The squad began its competition with the vault and Sodja won the event with a score of 8.3. Freshman Elizabeth Grindstaff finished second with 8.25; senior Karen Smith followed with 8.1; sophomore Jennifer Walke, 7.5; junior Nancy Barr, 7.25 and sophomore Karen Keyes, 6.8. The next event was the uneven bars, one that has traditionally been a difficult one for SUSC. According to 1 Berg, SUSC gymnasts showed marked improvement. saw some interesting things on the bars, she said. Our bar routines will come along. Theyre always so difficult, it takes so long to perfect a new routine. Sodja once again captured first place in the event with a score of 7.3. Following her were Walke, 6.55; Barr, 6.35; Keyes, 6.25; Smith, 6.15 and Grindstaff, 6.0 intrasquad meet Another of the difficult events for the gymnasts has been the balance beam. Combining a time limit with a routine composed of mandatory acrobatic and balance movements the beam poses gymnasts a challenge. Berg was still impressed with her athletes. We had some good performances on the beam, she said. Sodja also won the balance beam competition with score of 8.45. She was trailed by, Barr, 8.1; Grindstaff, 7.0; Keyes, 6.5; senior Yolanda Montoya, 6.15; Smith, 6.0 and sophomore Michelfe Goodwin, 5.8 Highlighting the competition was the final event o: evening, the floor exercise. Floor is always our strong well. We had four people who event and we really-di- d scored 8.0 or above, Berg said. Walke, from Sandy, Utah, finished first in the competition with an impressive score of 8.5. Narrowly trailing were Smith and Montoya, who scored indentical marks of 8.3. Barr finished with 8.0; Sodja, 7.95; Keyes, 7.8 and Goodwin, 6.7. Berg also noted that this is the first year that many of the gymnasts have performed in the competition, all four events. Berg was pleased, not only with the performances of the squad members, but also with the opportunity the meet gave her athletes to face the pressure of competition. E Cagers face alumni tonight The Southern Utah State College basketball team makes its season debut at 7:30 tonight at War Memorial Fieldhouse in the annual alumni game. One thing is for sure: This wont be another game against a and a supporting couple of cast of pickup players. Coach Bob Schermerhorn, his assistants and the players are all taking the game seriously. Twelve players, including a good whose representation of former names still dot the record book, have indicated they will compete against the current Thunderbird team in the first competition of the year. The alumni roster is expected to include two starters from the 1977 team which battled its way to a berth in the NALA National Tournament, guards Steve Hodson and Amos James. Also scheduled for action is Dunn Lee, the SUSC single season scoring leader and second on the career scoring ladder, and Gary Crosby, who tanks fourth in SUSC career scoring. In addition, members of the Thunderbird basketball team of 1982-8- 3 that won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship are expected to play in tonights game. Brian Devincenzi, Willie Hicks, Karl Anderson and Todd Christensen from that team will play for the alumni team. Boyd Adams, former mens cage coach and current womens coach, will serve as mentor for the alumni squad. How many times have fans ho-hu- has-bee- speculated over how good a team would be if only a certain player had been on the same team with another particular player? Lots of times; and with this game well see some of those outstanding players on the same squad. It should be very interesting, said Gil Mullen, a Schermerhorn assistant and coordinator for the alumni game. Mullen is the leading career rebounder in SUSC history. We have a very difficult schedule during the early part of our season, and we wanted to get some competition to prepare us for those strong teams we will be facing in our very first games, Schermerhorn said. I certainly believe we came up with what will be a tough game for us. It also ought to be very entertaining to those fans who remember some of the good players from former years. A special halftime slam dunk contest will also be held in conjunction with the game. Schermerhorn is uncertain who exactly is going to participate in the dunking event but said he is sure it will be highly entertaining. Following the Thanksgiving vacation, SUSC will host Grand Canyon College in the first game of the regular season. The Thunderbirds will meet the perennial NAIA power Antelopes on Saturday, Nov. 24. A Nov. 29 home contest against Western New Mexico University will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference warfare. |
