Lisa was named to the District 7 second team during the volleyball team tournament. Congratulations Lisa. The Lady Birds went on to step on New Mexico Flighlands, 15-- 9 and to set themselves up for a showdown with arch rival Mesa. Southern Utah won the first game of the match, but the tide turned midway through the second game' and Mesa gathered momentum to take the victory. We played very well the first game against Mesa, but after that we just seemed to stand around and watch the ball, Peterson said. When and then go out and you win the first game 15-lose the next two, you cant be too pleased with yourself and we werent. A third place finish isnt bad with a young team, Peterson continued. We played some games well, but we stood around a lot. One of our problems was service errors; we had a lot of them. Peterson said Southern Utah could have won the tournament if things had gone differently. We just didnt have the composure, she said. The 0 record is deceiving, as the injury-plague- d Thunderbirds lost several matches while key players were hurt. We were more unhealthy than weve ever been at district, and it couldnt have come at a worse time, Peterson said. Jill Reynolds, star hitter and blocker, played with a cracked jaw. She wore handball glasses to protect her left eye, which was injured two weeks ago. ' 15-1- Southern Utah States Lady Thunderbirds won three of five matches to take third place in the NAIA District Seven volleyball tournament at Pueblo, Colo., last weekend. The strong finish gave the Lady Birds a 0 season record, but was not enough to advance them further in post season play. Six teams played in the double elimination tournament. Eastern New Mexico, who blew Mesa off the floor to win the championship, advanced to the playoffs against the winner of District Three. Southern Utah, seeded fifth going into the Santa Fe, 15-tournament, defeated third-seede- d 5 and 15-- 4 on Friday to open the tourney. We played well against Santa Fe, said Joy Peterson, Thunderbird coach. We were seeded lower than they were but we did a good job and didnt let them intimidate us. We just played our game and won the match. The win catapulted the Lady Birds into a match with number one seed Eastern New Mexico. The Mustang women tocfk the match in straight games, 15-- 9 and Southern Utah came back to defeat Southern Colorado in two straight Saturday, 15-- 8 and 15-I thought we did a good job against Southern Colorado as well, Peterson said. We played some of our younger players, in order to rest the veterans, and we responded very well. 25-2- 13-1- 15-1- 1. 25-2- STATE BANK OF SOUTHERN UTAH 26 North Main Street, Cedar City Your hometown bank HELP W A N T E D We need volunteers to set up Jewish Exposition displays on Sunday, November 1 1 and to dismantle displays late Friday, November 16. The race took entrants around the campus on a 1.1 mile course with ups and downs everywhere. Bike and run competition tough Tumbling bikes, sprinting runners, and screaming fans were the highlights at the first Great Bike Fun Run Race. This is what the intramurals are all about, sa d director Tom Kingsford. There were no disappointed people and everyone had a great time. The race consisted of eight teams with two 'men and two women on each. The racers alternately took turns biking and running around a 1.1 mile course. Everybody put in all they had, Rachel Southwick, race coordinator, said. This made the race really close and exciting. Being just an intramural race, one might think ' that there wasnt any talent here. But talent turned out to be plentiful. This race had marathon runners and experienced bike racers participating. There was a lot of talent involved, Kingsford said, but it was the strategy of the teams that made the difference. This theory held true as the race unfolded. Team Five, consisting of Robert Evans, Dianne Wilcox, Robin Young and Dave Dunnell, was in second place going into the final running lap. Putting their fastest runner last, this team was able to overcome the leading team and win the race. The winning team received a $50 cash prize from student government, with the second place team getting $25 from the alumni association. Everybody just seemed to be happy to be here, Kingsford said. It was the challenge of it all that made it fun. With the race being so close, the teams all encouraged their members to push a little harder. As I said before, this is what the intramurals are all about, said Kingsford, The teams showed great sportsmanship and everybody was a winner. |
