McCollum debuts here this week SUSC art lovers will receive some artistic and exhibit culinary refreshment this week. A of Michael McCollums recent works, including large scale paintings and monotypes, will debut Thursday, Oct. 6 at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery. Light refreshment will be served at the opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. The artist will give an illustrated lecture at 8 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Utah Gravestone Art will run concurrently. Curated by the Folk Arts Program of the Utah Arts Council, the exhibit examines past and current traditions and innovations in the design and carving of gravestones frorr the initial anglo settlement of the state in 1847 to the present day. Both exhibits will be shown through Oct. 28. McCollum was born in Hoquaim, Wa. and received hisALF.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. His work has been exhibited at the Gallery Smith Anderson in Palo Alto, Ca. in 1980, the Terry Dintenfass Gallery in New York City in 1981 and the Magnolia Press in Oakland, Ca. in 1983. Magnolia Press also invited him to do an edition of monotypes during 1983. The artist describes his paintings as representing a slice of life. He states, My paintings are about the images and motifs of everyday life. I gathered the information for the paintings from reading ads in the Las Vegas newspapers and watching soap operas on TV. June Adams, the gallerys director, describes McCollum as a colorful, energetic speaker. She also feels fortunate that some of his pieces, some of which measure 5 feet by 8 feet, will soon join the SUSC Permanent Art Collection. The Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery is located on the lower level of the Old Administration Building. The operatic production will be this seasons joint venture between the SUSC Theatre Arts and Music Arts departments. Baker, associate professor of theatre, will be stage director; C. David Nyman, music department chairman, will direct the orchestra, and Special Instructor in Voice Jlene Hansen and Choral Music Director Aden will share responsibilites as vocal directors. The 18th century comic opera by Mozart will be presented in its English translation Feb. 2, 3, and 4, 1984. The Marriage of Figaro centers on the comic antics of a young married couple and a neglected countess who try to outwit the ladys womanchasing husband. Its going to be wonderful, states Hansen.
