Show The Thutiderbird Mormon history is next topic by Ethel Lyman Arrington's doctoral dissertation was titled Role of the Mormon Church in the Economic Development of the Mountain West, The SUSC guest lecturer taught economics at various institutions, including Utah State University, before joining the BYU faculty in 1972. He also taught at the University of Genoa and other Italian universities in 1958-5- 9 as a Fulbright Professor of American Economics. Arrington is a member of numerous professional, religious and civic organizations. A prolific writer, his articles have been published in Encyclopedia Britannica, Encyclopedia Americana, Readers Encyclopedia of the American West, in numerous LDS Church periodicals, and in national, local, and regional historical journals. Among the awards the convocation speaker has won are an honorary doctorate of humanities from USU, the Silver Good Citizenship Award from the Utah Society of Sons of the American Revolution, the David O. McKay Humanities Award from BYU, and the Charles H. Redd Award for distinguished contribution in the humanities from the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. Renowned Utah historian Leonard J. Arrington Utah State College, the second speaker in the colleges fall Convocation series. Brigham Young Colonizer, Church Leader and Family Man is the topic of Dr. Arringtons lecture. It will begin at 11 a.m. in the SUSC Auditorium and is free to the public. Arrington presently serves as director of the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Church History and as director of the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies, both located at Brigham Young University. The author of Great Basin Kingdom: An Economic History of the Latter-da- y Saints, Arrington served as historian for the LDS Church from 1972-7and as history division director of the church from 1978-8Arrington is originally from the Twin Falls, Idaho, area.
