GIVE US A CALL 586-4242 or 677-3838 Remember the Bard with mementos from the Cost of Living here posts slight decline The cost of living in Cedar City and St George declined slightly during the first quarter of 1992, according to information gathered by an SUU professor for the American Chamber of Commerce Researcher's Association (ACCRA). Numbers published in the ACCRA's Quarterly Cost of Living Index place the cost of Living in Cedar City at 90.l percent of the national average, while living in St. George costs 98.8 percent the national average. These figures compare to 91.6 percent in Cedar City and 100.2 percent for St. George during the fourth quarter of 1991, indicating a drop of about l.5 percent for each city. Information for the two cities is collected, compiled and analyzed each quarter by Alan Hamlin, SUU business professor. The data is then submitted to ACCRA, screened by three audits and published in the Cost of Living Index. The study is fu nded by Cedar City, St. George, WECCO and the Five County Association of Governments. The composite totals for each city are broken down intO six areas. For Cedar City, groceries were 106.5 percent the national average, housing 79.3 percent, utilities 82.6 percent, transportation 96.5 percent, health care 92.8 percent and miscellaneous 92.5 percent For St. George, groceries were 102.2 percent, housing 103.7 percent, utilities 80.9 percent, transportation 104 percent, health care 100.9 percent and miscellaneous 96.4 percent. The major difference in costs between the two cities was in housing, according to Hamlin. St. George remains significantly higher in housing costs than Cedar City, although recent activity in the latter has caused increases in the price of homes and the cost of apartment rents. Overall, the cost of lining in the two southern Utah cities remains attractive compared to other areas, such Las Vegas (103.5 percent), Los Angeles (132.6 percent) and San Diego (132.7 percent). ln addition to the quarterly ACCRA reports which compare costs to the cost of living in other cities around the country, Hamlin is able to compare costs in Cedar City and St. George quarter by quarter to assess local inflation rates. During the past three months (April to July 1992) overall prices in Cedar City rose just .07 percent or only one-fourth of one . percent on an annualized basis. St George prices rose 1.16 percent, or 4.6 percent annualized. Bookstore shines in summer (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3) says a lot of students have been in the store because they want to purchase their books early. "We do have some, but the majority comes in during September. During September we'll start putting the textbooks out and converting into a normal flow:' Ohms says. "Our mission is to support the students, faculty and staff and we don't want to lose sight of that:' Ohms says. He notes that SUU's Bookstore has the second lowest prices on books and that it provides the most used books to students, compared to every other institution, private and public, in Utah. .
