All of a sudden, every VC, NVA, ChiCom, Russian in the world is coming after us. Theres six of us, and theres got to be at least 200 people chasing us. So, I say, Lets get the hell out of here. Were not going to fight 200 people. While he was calling in for air support which he only grudgingly got because he was in supposedly neutral territory his Vietnamese mercenaries took off their helmets, boots and rifles and began running. And we ran like hell, and we got out of there, he says. The frustration involved with that was a microcosm of the war for me, of not only my war but the war in general, Baker says. The memories: For 13 years after he left Vietnam, Baker couldnt talk about his experiences there. He went through periods of melancholy, periods of violent reaction, but mostly he forgot what had happened to him there. To Baker, the war was a test of the arrogance of the American people. A humbling test. If they wanted to draff one of my two sons to fight in a war like Vietnam, I wouldnt allow them to go. I just wouldnt want them to have to go through that, he says. Sitting in an office now, one leg propped against a desk, he ponders a question. Would he serve again? His voice is low, hesitant: 1 think that if I had it to do over again, I probably would. Knowing what I know now, if Id been in the same circumstances, I probably would have done it. Vietnam. It was a glorious time, a dark time, he says now. Most of all, it was a romantic time. We cast away all of our morals. We lived in our own little kingdom, and we were the gods of that kingdom, he says. It was a totally unreal situation, and the power that accrued from the situation was more than a lot of people can handle. The beginning: Baker remembers where he was April 30, 1975. He was working at Fullerton College, in southern California. He saw a copy of the Los Angeles Times, a banner headline announcing the fall of Saigon to the North Vietnamese. I felt no sense of sadness, he says. It was more, Oh, well. He remembers. Id paid my dues, and I didnt want to go on paying them by feeling bad about it.
