Show The Thunderbird cagers sign new recruits T-Bi- rd The Southern Utah basketball recruiting season is almost finished, and according to Coach Bob Schermerhorn, it was a successful one. We lost some pretty good people from this years squad, and that means that we will need some talented players to fill the gap. We think that we have some people who can step right in and play for us. It was a great recruiting year and I am pleased with the people we.ve got The team will have six new faces next year, five juniors and a senior, complemeting the players from this years team. The lone senior is Gordon Anderson, a 68 forward from Dixie College, California-Berkelethrough the University of Anderson graduated from Layton High School where he was an player. As a sophomore at Dixie, he averaged 10 points and six rebounds a game. The other player signed from a Utah high school is Varlin Law from Timpview. Law is a 6 1 junior guard from Snow College. He started where he lettered in his first year. i, at He then completed a LDS mission and returned to play at Snow College as a starting guard averaging 12 points and four assists a game. The Badgers won the ICAC championship that year (1984). At Timpview he was team captain in three sports (football, basketball, and baseball). He played baseball for Snow and he may try out for the Thunderbird baseball team. Alex Adams, from Long Beach, Calif., is a 65 forward transfer from Saddleback College. According to Schermerhorn, Adams has exceptional jumping ability. He did not play last year, but as a sophomore for Saddleback he averaged over 13 points and eight rebounds. Irving averaged 12 points and three assists for Long Beach City College in addition to being the team captain and an outstanding defensive player. Irving is a very quick player who will pick a lot of opponent pockets when he is playing defense and leave a lot of would-b- e defenders standing when he is on offense, Schermerhorn said. The last two players to sign are both 7 junior forwards. Both of these players should fit well into the SUSC program, Schermerhorn said. They are very good students as well as good athletes. Both have the ability to play high caliber basketball, and both may surprise some people. Since neither did as well as junior college sophomores as was anticipated, they were to an extent overlooked. I think they can do very well 586-054- 3 a 4-- $1 .00 off each corsaqe for the LDSSA Dance! 6-- MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK This weeks male athlete of the week is Jim Kotkas. He was a regular as a freshman on a team that placed second in a highly competitive California Junior College Tournament. He is a strong player inside and on the boards. Brad Farmer was a northern California while playing at Vallejo High School. At Orange Coast last year, he averaged more than 10 points and six rebounds a game for the Pirates. Brad is a player who can score and rebound.
