The Thunderbirds placed third in the contest and were once again led by senior Corey Monsen, who placed fifth overall with a three-round total of 228. Utah State University won the Peppermill Classic with a total score of 911 . The University of Southern Colorado gtabbed second with a 914 total and SU's score of940 was good enough for third place. "Our district ream times for bod1 men and women were better than last year," says Houle. Freshman Chris Merkley finished first in the NCAA District Seven Championships for the SUU men. Merkley placed 45th in the 20. team IO.Kilometer race with a time of 31:39. For the Lady 'Birds, Anna Pett was first aero s the finish line for SU with a time of 19:00 in che SK race. SU' men improved their team time by seven minutes and one second over their 1992 time. 'BIRDS NAMED AWC PLAYERS OF 1llE WEEK: Running back Daniel Harris and defensive end Jeff Galyean were named the American West Conference players of the week following their performances in SU' s final game of the season. Harris rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries in the 23-17 Thunderbird victory at Cal tare Sacramento that gave SU a share of the A WC championship with UC Davis. Galyean collected six tackles, two of them solo, and three quarterback sacks. Both players were given first-team all-conference awards for their season performances. TIIUNDERBlRD MEN'S BASKETBALL: SU ho.m Northern Arirona tonight at 7:30 in the Centrum. During the break the 'Birds will host Northwest Nazarene Dec. 14, Eastern Washington Dec. 28, and Idaho Dec. 30. SU will travel to San Diego State Dec. 11, UTEP Dec. 20, and New Mexico State Dec. 22 . All home games are at 7:30 p.m. in the Cenaum. LADY ' BIRDS: SU's women hoop ters host four teams during the Christmas break: Montana Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m., Montana State Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m., Colorado State Dec. 30 at 5:30 p.m, and Weber State Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. All games are in the Cenaum. CORRECTION In the Nov. 18 issue of The ThunderbiTd, Swim Club Adviser Jean Reeves was quoted as saying, "The fun.ire goals of the club include hying to become an official team by spring quarter and participating in the NCAA's spring meets." This was a misquote and we apologize to Reeves for the misunderstanding. The swim club has no immediate plans to become an official team and will not be competing in NCAA meets in the spring. The Club does plan on competing with other large schools in the spring but it will not be associated with the NCAA.
