SUU Theatre presents "That certain night, the night we met, There was a magic abroad in the air, There were angels dining at the Ritz, And a nightingale sang in Eldon Square." Anda Nightingafe ~ Sang ... Martha MacLeish says she enjoys teaching because, " It helps me be more more clear about ideas being painted, it helps get me excited." MacLeish is a one-year faculty replacement in the art department. MacLeish is filling the spot temporarily vacated by Arlene Braithwaite, back next year. M acLeish comes from an art magnet junior high school in New Haven, Conn. A magnet school provides intensive education in one particular field, in this case the arts. MacLeish received a B.A . in painting and art history from the U niversity of Massachusetts at Amherst. She went on to receive a master's degree in painting from Yale University. She says she considers herself first a painter but likes teaching because sh e can help people look at art and better understand it. This in turn helps her clarify her own thoughts and better articulate her work. Ironically one drawback she finds in teaching is the fact that it is so interesting. She says she sometimes finds it hard to shift from teaching back to painting. She says that painters are very sensitive to things around them and everything provides a distraction. "It doesn' t take much to upset you," she says. A major milepost in her life occurred during her last year and-a-half at UM. She says that during this time she painted some of her strongest work. There was little confusion in her mind, she says, about what she was going to paint. During this period she did six-by-nine feet figure paintings. While most of her early work consisted of human figures , today she mostly does abstract space paintings. MacLeish says while growing up she knew she was either going to be a doctor or an artist. She eventually decided on art because she feels it's a way to express her ideas visually. " I think about [my art] as a companion or witness to what I'm thinking about," she says. In much of her current work she tries to recreate the feeling of the way space can make one feel. Her subject matter is often visual phenomena in the real world. Get hoppy with a .. 1/2 lb.
