Show THURSDAY, MARCH UNIVERSITY JOURNAL ARTS 14, 2002 Swingle Singers slated for concert at Canyon View The Swingle Singers, a world renowned a cappella singing ensemble, will make their southern Utah debut under the sponsorship of the Cedar City Music Arts in a concert tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in the Canyon View High School Auditorium. The Swingle Singers were founded in 1963 + and have since won a Grammy award. Members of the group include tenors, Andrew Gray and Michael Robinson; bases, Jeremy Sadler and Patrick Ardagh-Walter; sopranos Ann De Renais and Joanna Forbes; and altos, Sarah Simmonds and Wendy Nieper. Ward Swingle formed the group with a repertoire of “swung” Bach fugues. Over time the group has strived to bring a fresh and original approach to music. In the concert the eight musicians will combine organ fugues, orchestral overtures, Big Band favorites, and jazz standards. They will perform new compositions as well as original arrangements of pop hits, movie themes and folk tunes. The Swingle Singers have performed in regular tours throughout Europe, Asia, and North and South America. They have also performed with the Royal Philharmonic, BBC Concert Orchestra, and the Boston Pops. Their performance of Luciana Berio’s Sinfonia, which was written for the Swingle Singers and the New York Philharmonic, regularly sees them billed with orchestras in Budapest, New York, Toyko, Toronto, and Prague. The Swingle Singers have been involved in creating new compositions and interpreting existing repertoire in the opera wotld. Such projects include Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortileges and Berio's Oulis, The group has also colloborated with the Italian composer, Azio Cotghi, in his new opera Tat jana. L'Enfant et les Sortileges has provided the basis for cooperation with ballet and contempary dance companies, including the Ballet de Monte Carlo and the Nederlands Dans Theatre. In August 2000, the group joined the American Momix, an American dance company, in a series of gala performances at the Teatro Romano in Verona, They performed choreographed settings in baroque, classical, and rock music. In 1999 the Swingle Singers revived their association with television by joining the pop group Pulp to supply music for the British TV series Randall and HopRirk, The group will release a new album with Pulp in the spring. For the concert tomorrow, the Swingle Singers will perform with SUU’s Opus, the university's chamber choir. Individual tickets for the concert are $15 for adults and $5 for students. Fortune Cookie was directed by Utah native Clay Essig and was written by Rob Thomas. Thomas also wrote the screenplay for the film You Drive Me Crazy, and writes for the TV show Dawson’s Creek. The film premiered at the Hollywood Film Festival in 1999,and despite a good review by Variety Magazine, has yet to find a distributor. The film has also recieved top honors at several other film festivals. Currently, the film is being independently distributed at individual movie houses. Fortune Cookie tells the story of three couples that all end up in a Chinese restaurant one night. The film explores the various personalities, issues and quirks that each person brings to the their table. jealous. Doug’s mother, Carolyn, is there with her long-time boyfriend, Dean, who is trying to get up enough courage to propose. Heath’s sister, Beth, is at a table across the room with Trent, a good-looking DJ, whom she met at her book club. The individual situations and conversations give insight into thoughts and expectations of males and females in today’s dating scene. “We could say this is the movie for anyone who has ever been on a date,” Essig said. Although Fortune Cookie was filmed in Utah, and deals with dating, it has no affiliation with the Mormon Church, unlike the recent low-budget film Singles Ward. Fortune Cookie will open Friday at Cinema 8 and will continue to play there as long as tickets sale. Local radio stations will be having contests and free ticket give-aways for the movie.
