Ingram's invitation to an NBA tryout, the first for an Evans-coached Thunderbird, was extended by Jazz Director of Basketball Operations Scott Layden last week shortly after the NBA Draft. "I couldn't believe it at first, but now I'm just so excited about getting a chance to play," said Ingram. "It really is a dream come true for me." During Ingram's four years at SUU, the 6-2, 175-pounder from Las Vegas collected two firstteam All-American West Conference honors and was named Most Valuable Player of the 1995 AWC Tournament. Ingram was SUU's starter at point guard during his freshman and senior seasons and started at shooting guard as a sophomore and junior. Ingram averaged 14.4 points, 3.7 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game during his senior season. His 104 assists last season moved him to second place alltime at SUU in that category. an Francisco made Ryan Jensen the second-highest draft pick in the history of the school earlier this summer as the Giants selected the Southern Utah University right-hander with the seventh pick of the eighth round in the 1996 amateur baseball draft. Jensen, a junior pitcher from West Valley City, Utah, finished the season with a 3-7 record and an 8.66 ERA for the Thunderbirds, but went 3-3 with a 5.45 ERA over the final seven weeks of the season. Perhaps the biggest attraction for the major league scouts, however, was Jensen's fastball, which was regularly clocked in the mid-90 mile an hour range. "Ryan has a lot of pure talent," SUU Coach Jeff Scholzen said. "That kind of velocity alone got the attention of the scouts, but when he finished the season as strong as he did he really helped himself. San Francisco didn't watch him until the end of the season when he was on top of his game. "He's a great kid and although we'll hate to lose him, I think he's got the stuff to have a lot of success at the next level," Scholzen added. Jensen, who also led the Thunderbirds in home runs and RBI, is a graduate of Snow College and Cottonwood High School. His selection in the eighth round makes him the second-highest pick in SUU history, behind catcher Mike Ryser who was taken in the sixth round by the Oakland Athletics in 1987. Ryan's performance in training camp allowed him to skip Rookie League and jump straight to Single A, where he is currently in the starting rotation at Bellingham (Wash .) of the Northwest League. Through his first two starts, he was 1-1 with a 3.45 ERA. Athletic Director Bishop named to committees n the past week, Southern Utah University Athletic Director Jack Bishop has been appointed to a pair of prominent national committees by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) . Bishop has landed a spot on NACDA's 1996 Pigskin Classic Host & Games Committee for the 1996 game pitting BYU vs. Texas A & M, August 24, in Provo. Bishop will be part of a 10member committee charged with monitoring the game for NACDA, which hosts the game annually, to give recommendations for improving futµre contests. The NCAA Administrative Committee has tabbed Bishop to serve on the 1997 NCAA Voting Committee for the 91 st Annual NCAA Convention in Nashville, Tenn. Members of that committee are appointed for one-year terms, but may serve a total of three years. NCAA member institutions vote to enact legislation that governs the operation of intercollegiate athletics every year at the annual convention . "I think both of those committees are very important to two of the most important organizations in college sports (NACDA and the NCAA) so it's a great honor to be selected," said Bishop. SUU Athletic Director Jack Bishop said a search for a replacement has begun and that Shurtiff's current assistants will be considered for the job. In a letter to the SUU administration, Shurtliff expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the women's program the last five years and said he "thoroughly enjoyed" his tenure with the Thunderbirds. The father of 12 cited the time and energy demands of running the program and recruiting as reasons for his departure. 'We're grateful for the job Larry has done with our women's team over the past five years," said Bishop. "He's done an exceptional job of making the women's program successful at the Division I level and L has done a fine job of representing the intsitution." Shurtliff leaves with a 68-67 record in five seasons. In his first season {1991-92), SUU struggled to a 6-21 record and then improved to 12-15 in 1992-93. Since then, the 'Birds have posted 16, 17 and 17 win seasons and claimed two American West Conference championships. Shurtliff was named AWC Coach of the Year in each of the past two seasons after guiding his team to identical 8-0 records in league play. Shurtliff isn't leaving the cupboard dry. Two starters and six letterwinners from his 1996-96 team that went 17-11 return and will be joined by a recruiting class Shurtliff calls "the best group, overall, that we've brought in." "The group that's still there are outstanding players and really good citizens and they'll do a great job next year," said Shurtliff. I 641/2 N. Main 586-0977 Open Mon.-Frl.12-8 p.m. Sat. 10-8 p.m. |
