An associate professor of education and reading and a learning specialist, Thompson will discuss how we are all learners, and she will focus on the way individuals may impower themselves to become better. She will discuss six basic steps necessary to monitor and manage learning, expanding on the restructuring powers of the brain. Im a teacher. I work with learning and reading disabled, she said. Teaching about reading is my vocation. Reading about learning is my avocation. Thompson holds a bachelors degree in elementary education and a masters degree in special education. She has extensive experience in learning strategies, learning disabilities, cognitive behavior management, curriculum instruction and reading. Thompson has also published many articles on the various subjects. The annual Faculty Honor Lecture is sponsored by the O.C. Tanner Foundation, which also provides a $1,000 stipend for the faculty member selected. There will be a reception for Thompson from 3 p.m. in the Tanner Room of the Braithwaite Liberal Arts Center. Winter quarter Convocations, held each Thursday at 11 a.m., will begin Jan. 9. Students may course, ARLE 201. register this week for the one-hoGrades for the course are based mainly on Convocations attendance; students must attend seven of the 10 lectures in the series. Students registered for the course must also attend one SUU theatre production, a musical performance and a Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery show. The course may be repeated for credit up to four times. All Convocation lectures are free and open to the public. Activity courses dropped Students are no longer required to take any physical education courses beyond PE 101 to fill graduation requirements. Formerly, students were required to take PE 101 plus an additional skills course for a total of four credit hours. When SUU dropped the activity portion of PE 101, the 1992 catalog reflected the reduction in required hours from four to two. However, now the change applies to all students regardless of the catalog they may be graduating under. According to D. Mark Barton, director of admissions and records, SUU normally doesnt allow students to mix and match catalogs. However, he added, this is a major curriculum change and not a catalog change. Even though the requirements have changed, Barton said administrators encourage students to take additional one-hoskills courses to better round out their educations. C 667 S.
