Distinguished presenters, each with much experience in the fields of writing and teaching, will conduct workshops in theory and hands on sessions. The four areas covered will include: poetry, childrens literature, science fiction, and the personal essay. There will also be a session on methods of teaching creative writing. Richard Shelton, a professor of English at the University of Arizona, will lead the poetry session. He is the author of 14 books of poetry including The Bus to Veracruz for which he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award. More than 200 of his poems have been published in various periodicals and his works have been collected in some two dozen anthologies. Utah childrens author Margaret Rostkowski has published two childrens books. Her 1986 book After The Dancing Days has been published in five countries and has won 10 awards, including honors from the International Reading Association. She holds a BA in history from Middlebury College and a masters degree from the University of Kansas. She is also the author of The Best of Friends, (1989). Ken Brewer, a professor of English at Utah State University, will conduct the workshop on the personal essay, which is predicted to become a major literary form in the 1990s. Brewer has published five books of poetry and has been published in numerous journals. He is past editor of The Blue Fife, a journal of western poetry. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Utah. Jim Brummels will discuss writing science fiction, a genre that has proven to be extremely popular. Brummels is at Wayne State College of Nebraska and is the author of 614 Pearl and Deus ex Machina as well as meny short stories. He is also editor of Nebraska Territory and director of the Plains Writer Circuit. He holds a graduate degree from Syracuse University. Dr. David Lee will teach a workshop on Methods of Teaching Creative Writing. Dr. Lee is a professor of English at SUSC and the author of such works as The Porcine Legacy, Shadow n Weaver, and Days Work. Lee is a Utah poet and has received numerous awards and made many public appearances. The presenters will perform readings in the evenings following the class meetings. Participants can also take advantage of the Utah Shakespearean Festival activities which will be ongoing during the conference. The tuition fee for this course is $110 and the conference will be held at the Cedar City Holiday Inn. College credit is available at no extra cost.
