Not from the sun. They have a really strong interrogation lamp, Carol Siskind said of her relationship with her parents. Speaking as the first Convocations series guest of Spring Quarter, Siskind entertained her audience with her humorous parodies of life. Her stories and jokes ranged from the dangers of parents to the sadistic joys of being in love. Siskind said she was once called to jury duty and her mother said it was the last chance she had of meeting a lawyer. I met someone, she said, but it will be 10 or 12 years until I can see him. The comedienne also said she wants to fall in love. I want to meet someone joys really special, someone I can take for granted. She said she once went with someone for three years and it was one of those love-hat- e relationships. We both loved him, we both hated me. Siskind has been performing for six years, having graduated from Cornell with a degree in psychology before her debut. She currently works in Los Thursday, advised students to stick to their guns and pursue whatever career they think interests them. Angeles, where shes preparing for a role in television or movies. Among her credits include a recent appearance on the Merv Griffin Show, an NBC program, Evening at the lmprov, and a show on HBO. She said there she would win the Miss Neurosis Pageant, if there were such a contest, because she is crazy. Im always afraid Im missing something. Ill go to a party and stay until 6:00 a.m. so I wont miss anything. It doesnt matter, the next day someone calls and says, Right after you left.... She also had some comic perceptions about friendships. According to her, men hang out together for 10 years without saying a word to each other. Unless, she said, he stands in front of the television set during an instant replay. She also said one of her friends still wears those high needle heels, so high that a cop has to talk her down from them every night. Speaking to the men in the audience, she said money is an issue for women. I was brought up on fairy tales. I believed a Prince Charming would come, sweep me off my feet and pay for everything. Now, I think if he ever does come hes going to owe Mastercard a lot of money. Siskind also said now is a great time for women and because of that, its also a great time for men. In her closing remarks, Siskind said she never dreamed she would have a career and work seven nights a week and love it. Stick to your guns, she advised in a serious note, and do what you want. If you like what youre doing then its only natural that you become good at it. College fundraising telethon Riders subject to sets $40,000 goal for 1985 by Kon Kontogiannis About 350 students and faculty manning telephones for hours at a time will shoot for $40,000 in donations to the college when SUSC begins its 14th annual fundraising telethon Tuesday. The telethon will run from March 26 to April 18 to raise scholarship money for current students by seeking money from local residents, SUSC alumni, and parents of students. It will be in operation every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Development Director Jack Bishop last week told the SUSC Institutional Council that the $40,000 mark is easily within reach, considering that last years telethon collected $38,000 in pledges, and about $33,000 of that has been collected. Paul Whetman is chairing the event, and Golda Jean Orton is serving as assistant chairman. Both Whetman and Orton are members of the SUSC Foundation Board. People sense the need students have for scholarships, said Telethon Coordinator Zelma Alger. Each year they continue to rally to help continuing SUSC students achieve their educational goals. Students, alumni, faculty and staff, and volunteers from various civic groups and organizations man telephone lines during the 6 to 10 p.m. telethon shifts. They will telephone alumni, parents of students and friends of the college in their quest for scholarship pledges. Telethon money is reserved for sophomore, junior and senior students, those who have proven their academic and leadership abilities at the college. Donors are allowed to earmark their contributions for specific academic schools or departments, if they wish; if not, donations will go into the colleges general scholarship fund. Were continually gratified by the tremendous support SUSC programs receive, Bishop said. Alger said there are still open slots for volunteers, and wed love to have 'volunteers call us and offer to help. Interested parties should call the Office of Development at SUSC, she said. Bishop also reported to the Institutional Council that 957 seats have been sold in the schools Centrum fundraising efforts, while one donor has also been found to fund scoreboards in the Centrum, due for completion this fall. People who ride recreational vehicles on campus can be arrested. The law says that any recreational vehicle, which includes snowmobiles, three and cannot be used on a state, city, or county street. Recreational vehicles can cross such streets if they come to a complete stop and cross on a ninety degree angle to get to a recreational vehicle area, according to the law. The college security has let college students ride from Juniper and Manzanita through the campus to parking lots where they have had to unload, said Kent D. Hoyt, the colleges chief of security. Thats technically illegal but were not concerned with students who ride on campus pathways as we are about students who leave the pathways and move onto the grass, destyroying the shrubbery, said Hoyt. Most of the damage was done during the winter when the campus was covered in snow which hid the sprinkling system. The unaware users of recreational vehicles would run and cause over the sprinkler-head- s them. to damage s, arrest The extent of the damage done to the sprinkler heads cannot yet be determined until the sprinklers are turned on. The sprinkler heads are very expensive. Security has made violators pay seventy dollars and when the extent of the damage has been estimated, violators may be expected to pay anywhere around two hundred dollars, said Hoyt. Most of the damage was caused during the winter quarter but at this time of year when the grass is soft the tires of the recreational vehicles destroy the grass. The penalty is a Class B misdemeanor which could be up as high as $299 plus the impoundment of the vehicle, Hoyt said. Lately motorbikes have been ridden across campus mainly because there arent many parking stalls and students are left with no alternative but to take their bikes to their classes. Parking lots for motorbikes are going to be improved and there will be stalls for motorbikes in all of the campus parking lots. Students are encouraged to use these parking stalls especially since they arent charged if they park their motorbikes in designated stalls, said Hoyt. |
