Show The Thunderbird Two try for Trumans For the first time in SUSCs history, two students have been selected as semifinalists in the Harry S. Truman Scholarship program. Natalie Jones, a communication major, was chosen by the Truman Foundation as one of Nevadas and Ken Harvey, who has a double major in business administration and communication, will be a contender for Utah. Its the most prestigious academic honor there is for the school to receive, says M. L. Smith, director of SUSC Forensics. Were excited at SUSC for the chance to get two semi-finalis- I think its really for teachers. I think the fact that SUSC has had two Truman scholars and that there are two in one year proves to me, and should prove to others, that SUSC is a fine educational institution, says Harvey. He is attending SUSC to prepare for law school. To be nominated for the program, an applicant must be a e sophomore pursuing his her or bachelors degree, manintain at least a 3.0 grade point average and be enrolled in a major that will permit access to a career in local, state or national government. Entrants are judged on their applications, which include records of their performance involvement and in high school, their letters of recommendation from college d advisers and a essay on governmental problems or policies. Approximately 1,000 students applied this year, says Decker. Only 101 were chosen as semifinalists. Those who are selected as go on to personal interviews with the Regional Review Panels across the country. Jones and Harvey completed their interviews in Both the contestants and their advisers thought the interviews went well. Scholarship recipients are chosen after the interviews are evaluated. The winners will be l. notified sometime in four-yea- r accredited Only colleges and universities are allowed to nominate applicants. SUSC has had two winners in past years: Chris Kerecman in 1980 and Jessica Barton in 1982. I think its really remarkable that SUSC has had two Truman scholars within the last three years, says Decker. It speaks very favorably of SUSC and the entire academic surroundings of the college. semi-finalis- semi-finalis- ts Truman scholars in one year. 500-wor- semi-finalis- ts st Jeans on Sale Ourspring pants have arrivea! 1 a.m. t 0 p.m. Buy a sweater vest at the regular price; Sweaters 50 off!
