SUU's behavioral and social sciences department provides great one-on-one helpfor students in a mriety of disciplines. Behavioral & social sciences offers -wide variety.of courses "Our students are successful in the job market-in counseling, teaching, government employment opportunities, and also in the law profession," says Wayne Hinton, SUU department head of behavioral and social sciences. "Our students also report that they're well-prepared for graduate school. We have one of the highest success ratios in the country for getting our pre-law students admitted into law school. In ·general, we have a high success rate for all of our students who apply to graduate school," says Dr. Hinton. About 22 percent of the department's graduates choose to pursue a master's degrees. In the last two years, 19 out of 19 psychology majors who applied to graduate school were accepted; and one history major scored 99 percent on the Law School Admittance Test last year. SUU offers a major and minor in history; a geography minor; a major and minor in political science with a pre-law emphasis; majors and minors in both sociology and psychology, with a psychology minor for elementary education majors; a social science composite major for secondary education majors and a social science composite minor for elementary education majors. Hinton says he's not the only one impressed with the quality of student teachers produced by SUU. "Our student teachers are said to be among the best they {cooperating teachers] ever see." SUU faculty members have several goals to help students, he says. "Our faculty are qualified and concerned about students. Even with the growth at SUU we're working to keep the studentto-teacher ratio low to have good interpersonal relationships with students. We're concerned about being available for counseling and advisement; and, we've limited the siz.e of some upper division courses by adding more class sections to the schedule." Hinton says SUU's behavioral and social science department has wellqualified professors. "Our faculty stay abreast by researching and writing in their fields. Three have authored books, and 11 have published articles in professional journals, which is a good indication that our teachers know their stuff because those articles are adjudicated by peer professors from across the country. And all of our faculty members have presented papers at professional conferences." With the growth of the department, the psychology discipline will become a separate department in about two years, Hinton estimates. But currently, as a SUU's behavioral and social sciences department is renowned for preparing students for a wide range of professions. behavioral and social sciences department that acts as an umbrella over four major subject areas, the diversity has been a plus, he says. ''We've supp<1rted one another and drawn from the strengths of expertise in the different sectiOJ\S of the department while we are togeth~. And I think it's good for students to major in one discipline and minor in another within our department." The .SUU behavioral and social sciences department maintains a human resources lab and a live animal lab for the psychology students and also operates a statistics and computer lab for all students. |
