Student development office is ~ere to help all students "Our purpose is to help students become self-sufficient academically, intellectually, and socially," says Judith Bonn.iksen, director of student development, "through providing support services and programs. We don' t tell students what to do. We just try to put out a helping hand and show students the options that are available." The staff members of SUU's Student Development Center can advise students on careers and choices for majors and minors, help set up class schedules, provide freshman orientation seminars, provide counseling, and direct students to other cam.pus offices for more specializ.ed needs. ''We're often the first ones that students and parents meet when they come to SUU," Bonniksen says. "And we can help them get appointments with faculty advisers or find other campus services that they need." The student development center offers a testing room where students can take the College Level Examination Program to "CLEP" out of some general education requirements. "It can really help students move into the coursework for their major faster," Bonniksen says. Other testing services include ACT, SAT, LSAT, MAT, MCAT, and a variety of interest inventory and career decisions tests. One of the main functions of the student development center is to give entering freshmen "tools to help them be successful in their college career," she says. Summer • 1993 has five two-day freshmen orientation workshops scheduledstudents can register for any one. During the workshop, freshmen can learn all about SUV and register for fall quarter classes. "It's a chance for students to get everything ready for next year and to make new friends." The agenda for the two-day workshop includes pizza, a Dutch oven dinner, an over-night stay in campus housing, panel discussions on time management, decision making, drugs, alcohol, and date rape, and about four and a half hours for advisement, registrationrand scheduling. "Some of the tools that we want students to take with them after the workshop is information about general education requirements, how to use the class catalog and register or withdraw from classes, how AP classes and CLEP tests can replace some GE requirements, what majors and minors are, and how many credit hours are required for graduation," says Bonniksen. 'We want students to understand that this is a comprehensive university and not a liberal arts institution; you must have a declared major in order to graduate. We offer resources to help students decide what educational course is best for them." Entering students who cannot take advantage of the summer workshops will have the opportunity to enroll in a oneSUU's student development team (from left) My/en Rnth, /udith Bonniksen, Eleen weekend course the first week of fall, Evans and /eff Sheffield. winter, or spring quarters of next year. |
