Show i r Grad accountant program continues to grow at SUSC Enrollment in the SUSC Master of Accountancy program is now 33 and expected to climb. This compares with four students in 1985, when the program was established under the direction of Utahs State Board of Regents. A primary focus of the program is to prepare students for employment as Certified Public Accountants. Technical training which students receive in the Master of Accountancy program assists in preparing students for the CPA exam, said Harold Hiskey, dean, business, technology and communication at SUSC. Additionally, the program prepares students to become successful accountants in industry, government, or other related areas. The Master of Accountancy program is designed for those students who have received a bachelors degree in accounting with an emphasis in business. Students have the choice of either a or a two-yea- r program of study, depending upon previous accounting education prior to entry into the masters program. Utah, Hawaii and Florida are the only states requiring four-quart- er completion of 46 credit hours beyond their bachelors degree training for eleigibility to take the CPA exam. Allowances for applicable work experience are taken into consideration, said Hiskev, But work hours are not considered as attractive as credit hours. The progiuir. includes 26 hours of Basic Core courses along with 20 hours of approved elective courses. Hiskey said the Big Eight firms recruiting SUSC students speak highly of the Masters of Accountancy program. The trend is to see more states requiring the completion of credit hours as a prerequisite for the CPA exam, said Hiskey. The Master of Accountancy Program requires students to take their electives in accounting or complementary fields such as finance, management information systems, entrepreneurship, government, taxation, economics, auditing and quantitative methods. Some elective courses are taught in a reading and conference setting, allowing maximum flexibility of instructor lecture, greater learning, student professor interaction, and research opportunities. w; iv;j;rs U5l. 7L aur EMVU, hLriLMbLk 124 S.
