Show The Thunderbira Yazzies art is wonderful Art review by Debi Robinson-Smit- Monday April 8, 1985 Page SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT! 8 O CHICKEN h The Braithwaite Gallery has never looked better! A new exhibit opened Thursday, and it is definitely one not to be missed. The 44th Annual Cedar City National Art Exhibit and a Senior Portfolio by Kelvin Yazzie are on display through April 26, and both are colorful and exciting. 85, in the large gallery, is a variety of works by artists from all over the United States. Two hundred artists submitted slides to the juror, Edward D. Maryon. Of those, 57 were selected for the exhibit. Maryon also selected four to receive cash awards: Kairos 111 by Von Allen, Breakfast at Montalvo by William A. Berry, Susana Window 1 by Ron Hinson, and Untitled No. 119 by Harry Melroy. In addition, Rio Grande Gorge by Spike Ress was selected for the Cedar City Art Committees Purchase Award. The Friends of the Gallery Purchase Awards went to Ron Rencher for Canyon de Chelly and Marilee B. With pottery and ceramics, watercolors, prints, photographs and sculpture in both traditional and very progressive works, it would be difficult to find nothing of interest to almost any taste. Each work presents a different approach to visual communication, and as a whole the show is a treat. Kelvin Yazzie, an SUSC art student, is presenting his Senior Portfolio in the Small Gallery. His is a particularly intriguing view of the world, built as it is on his Native American heritage and his own very unique perspective. His ceramic work, Indian Mask With No Reservation, is a poignant look at the confusion inherent when two cultures collide. It portrays a person in the world, but not part of it. It provides the viewer with some understanding of the dismay and culture shock of the Native American, and asks some tough questions about the causes of that condition. Baby Needs a New Pair of Mocassins is an Indian, horse, and buffalo painting that is anything but traditional and stale in its approach to the subject matter. Repeating angles and forms, large blocks of earthy color, and a stopped-actio- n feeling all work together to make this painting effective. On first glance, it looks naive, but a second look soon dispells that impression. It has a depth that compels the viewer, and it is hard to move away the eye is drawn back to its sweeping forms. Yazzies work is a marvelous synthesis of past, present, and future. All-Med- Lois7 Sandwich World 200 North 1100 West (Next to Open Monday thru Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. WE DELIVER!
