Show Community SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 11, 1995 7 Domestic Blitz v " By Dixie Brunner Go get me a cardboard box - When I was a little girl, Hal- loween was one of my favorite times of year. It was such fun. We lived on a southern Illinois farm, where we operated an apple orchard. So on the big night, we would have to drive into the small town of Patterson for the official trick or treating My parents would just drop us off at the start" of town, and pick us up two hours later. The costumes were never t, they were constructed via our imagination, and with me, most often a cardboard box. We would discuss the costumes that we were going to wear for weeks in advance, even penningdetailed drawings. They would be dramatic, complicated disguises. And then we would wait until the night before and go into a panic, begging mom for help. (This was usually the point where the parent grabs an old sheet, draws two black eyes on it and calls it quits.) Back then as now, you could always tell the kids who had You could pick super-momtheir kids out at the annual Halloween party in a minute. Their offspring was easy to identify, shehe had the perfectly matching and coordinated costume, with the seams still warm from where she had sewn them. I distinctly remember one year. I decided that I was going to be a TV set. I took a cardboard box and cut out one side, and glued buttons on the side for the controls, got some classy black tights and was ready to collect the goodies. The only trouble was that the box kept spinning around so I couldnt see. I walked into walls and tripped over curbs. I came away from the evening with bruises all over and tom up store-bough- s. Oh sure, you did sit down and go through each and every item that you had gotten, but it wasnt to check for razor blades or drugs. You analyzed the candy to determine what, if any, treats you were going to pass along to your parents andor younger siblings or cousins. The reject category would include rootbeer barrels, apples and black licorice. There were a few favorite houses to visit.
